[Moments Later]

Bob slid down another slope on his way to the supposed landing site. There was little in the way of sound in the trees at the moment, but he was confident that it was going to change soon.

Entering a small clearing, Bob looked around a little and noticed no one was around. No shuttle, no guards, no officers … just a darkened spot on the ground where a shuttle had obviously been not too long ago.

“Sadly, that means they were expecting me and now I need to figure out another plan,” Bob said quietly to himself as he fell to the ground and leaned against the back of a stump that was large enough to provide cover to the rear while he pulled out his tricorder and began to scan the area for another option. They had obviously come in more than one shuttle, and that shuttle would have to be in the area even with the one he had downed earlier.

A spot lit up like a Christmas tree.

“Great, cavalry.”

It was plain as day. Someone had just landed a runabout, which would mean many more officers in the area bearing down on them and that they would be heading his way soon. It was less than a quarter-mile away and that meant running the rest of the way to try and keep ahead of them.

A ravine came up again and was the most direct route to the site. With that thought, the firefight started.

The first beam missed wide left and scorched a tree. Taking it as a warning shot, as procedure dictated, Bob picked up the pace and made it to the ravine just as the second shot came off and missed wide right.

He fell to one knee and slid down the muddy side of the ravine. Sliding onto his back, he was able to get off a shot at the first officer to breach the side of the ravine and stick his neck out just far enough for the phaser beam to knock him back. Hitting the bottom, he rolled backward onto his feet and took off up the other side, dodging back and forth between the trees to try and provide cover.

Less than a tenth of a while and he would be on top of the runabout and hopefully on his way out of there. First, he had to get there.

Getting off another shot, he darted from behind the trees and took off in the general direction of the landing area. He didn’t know what he was going to fine there, but it was their best shot of getting out of this place. All he could do was hope that the rest were still hanging in there.

Dodging and falling to the ground in a roll, Bob was relieved that he was still alive, but they were either getting to be better shots or were getting closer. Both alternatives were not enticing in any way.

With the last thought he broke into a clearing and immediately saw the hulk of a Danube class runabout sitting on the ground. Luckily, no one shot at him right away, but he knew it would be short-lived if he wasn’t able to find a place to take cover while he moved quietly in range of the craft.

However, it was the very definition of a clearing, and as such he tempted fate and darted to the runabout, ducking behind a nacelle as his attackers came into the clearing and let off another shot. It missed, but now they were onto his plan and they were going to be calling in what was going on very soon.

Quietly making his way to the door, Bob saw a head poke out and quickly stunned an officer that was still in the runabout. Falling to the ground with a definite THUD, Martens hoped that would be the end of it for now. If he could get into the air, he could maybe do some good.

Bob walked inside and quickly checked to make sure he was alone. Heading to the cockpit, the craft was already prepared to take off … obviously they were expecting to have taken someone prisoner sooner rather than later and wanted a quick escape.

“First bit of good luck for the day,” Bob said as he sealed all of the hatches and took off into the sky. He was able to see four officers standing in frustration as the runabout took off. Just as soon as their frustration had ended they were back into the brush and Bob quit paying attention. The goal was now to get out of here.

It didn’t take more than a few seconds of looking to figure out what was going on. Dots of life signs lit up his screen in one area. While they had cover, it was not going to last long if the rest of the group was allowed to meet up. The best option was a quick escape with minimal casualties.

Taking the runabout down once again, Bob hugged the treeline and headed to their location. It had to be quite a site to see a Danube running as close to the trees as it was, but time was of the essence.

Breaking into their area, Bob quickly could see the battle lines that had been drawn and knew where he needed to go. “Tank, Bob here, I’m in the Danube above you guys … we’re going for a quick extraction this time. I’ll land behind you and I need everyone onboard in less than thirty seconds. I’ll provide cover once I’m on the ground.”

“We’ll be ready boss, this is going to be a close run thing,” Tank said over the channel.

“Right, see you soon.”

Bob maneuvered into position behind the group and could see the phaser blasts lashing out at his craft. They were not going to just let him take them and quickly they moved to flank their position. Bob moved into the back and grabbed a phaser rifle and two hand phasers. Setting both of the hand phasers for overload, he was ready to provide whatever distraction they might need.

As the shuttle hit the ground and the door opened quickly Bob could see Tank and their new friends ready to get onboard. Martens waved them  over even as he brought the phaser rifle up and rifled off a few errant shots.

“Get everyone onboard and take off, I’ve got a mobile transporter booster that I’ll fire off once you guys are clear. I’m going to try and cause as much of a ruckus as possible.”

“Watch yourself, these guys seem pissed for some reason.”

“Don’t worry about me, I’ll see you in the air in a few minutes. Keep them safe,” and  Bob was off to try and draw away the rest of the officers.

Ducking behind some cover, he pulled out a tricorder and was able to pinpoint their locations. Grabbing a hand phaser and firing it off to begin the overload, Bob stood up quickly and tossed the device as far as he could. The resulting explosion was both loud and satisfying as debris rained down from the sky.

Getting out from behind the cover Bob fired off some more shots as he moved to his next area. The smaller group was now disposed of and were certainly going to be licking their wounds for at least a little while.

The runabout took off quickly and Bob smiled, first part of the plan was done and now it was up to him to keep everyone occupied while they got far enough away.

“Time to act like a damned fool,” Bob said as he got up, thumbed the other hand phaser into overload and tossed it aside, back where he had been before and then took off running. He brought his phaser rifle up and fired at the solid wall in front of him. It carved a hole, just large enough for him to run through before the ensuing explosion.

More debris, more chaos, and less people were left. Panting from the expulsion of energy, Bob smiled as he thumped the transporter booster and was taken to the transporter pad on the runabout. Putting the phaser rifle down on the ground, he smiled as Tank turned around.

“Someday we’ve got to get ahead of this,” Tank said, “we seem to have a knack for cutting it close.”

“I like close calls.” He nodded to everyone onboard, “I’m sure we will need to introduce ourselves soon, but would you mind if we at least tried to find safer accommodations at the moment?” It was said with a smile, but he was done with getting shot at for the day. “Set course for Starbase One and let the admiral know that we will need some rooms.”

Thanks to Charles for the JP, now let's get moving!
