En Route to Deep Space 6, USS Waterloo
Silence was something that Bob had cherished for a long time. It might have started in the fields of crops where he grew up, but it had been more and more elusive every days since then and he now cherished every moment he could get to himself.
It wasn't just the silence, but the anticipation of what might be coming that was calming his nerves at the moment. It had been too long since he had been on any kind of starship with any kind of mission that would satisfy his desire to do "something".
"Computer, time to Deep Space 6?" he said, taking a drink from the water glass next to his chair.
"ETA is four hours, thirteen minutes at our present course and speed."
Finished with the glass, Bob sighed, "please notify me when we are fifteen minutes from our destination."
"Acknowledged."
Slamming the glass back onto the table, Bob stood up and tugged at his uniform. While he was officially carrying the rank of Captain, he was wearing the rank of Lt. Commander for his cover at the moment. The uniforms had not changed much since the last time he had done this, but he hoped for something better soon.
Walking out of the door, and hearing the reassuring swoosh of the door closing behind him, he took in the sights and sounds of an ancient Excelsior class vessel operating at peak efficiency.
Four hours. I might as well take a long walk before the fun begins.
Sincerely,
Bob Martens
