In sports, a type of podium can be used to honor the top three competitors in events. In the modern Olympics a tri-level podium is used. Traditionally, the highest platform is in the center for the gold medalist. To their right is a lower platform for the silver medalist, and to the left of the gold medalist is a lower platform for the bronze medalist. At the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics, the Silver and Bronze podium places were of equal elevation. In many sports, results in the top three of a competition are often referred to as podiums or podium finishes. In some individual sports, podiums is an official statistic, referring to the number of top three results an athlete has achieved over the course of a season or career. The word may also be used, chiefly in the United States, as a verb, "to podium", meaning to attain a podium place.[4]

In some motorsport events, including Formula One, a representative of the team that won the race will also be present at the podium, with a fourth podium step, trophy and champagne. In many forms of motorsport, the three top-placed drivers in a race stand on a podium for the trophy ceremony. In an international series, the national anthem of the winning driver, and the winning team or constructor may be played over a public address system and the flags of the drivers' countries are hoisted above them. The recordings are short versions of the national anthems, ensuring the podium ceremony does not exceeded its allocated time. Should a driver experience problems with his car on a slow lap in Formula One, that driver is transported to the pit lane via road car by the Formula One Administration security officer.[8]

The term has become common parlance in the media, where a driver may be said to "be heading for a podium finish" or "just missing out on a podium" when he is heading for, or just misses out on a top three finish. The NASCAR Cup Series, the highest level of stock car racing in the United States, does not use a podium in post-game events or statistics. Instead, the winning team celebrates in victory lane, and top-five and top-ten finishes are recognized statistically. Those finishing second to fifth are required to stop in a media bullpen located on pit lane for interviews. The INDYCAR NTT IndyCar Series does not use a podium at either the Indianapolis 500 or at Texas Motor Speedway. The Indy 500 has a long tradition of the winning driver and team celebrating in victory lane, while Texas Motor Speedway president Eddie Gossage has stated that victory lane should be reserved for the winner of the race.[11] The series uses a podium at all other races, particularly road course events.

Architectural podiums consist of a projecting base or pedestal at ground level, and they have been used since ancient times. Originally sometimes only meters tall, architectural podiums have become more prominent in buildings over time, as illustrated in the gallery.

Thank you for your participation as a podium speaker at the 2023 AUA Annual Meeting. A podium session is designed to permit the author to orally present and explain the objectives, methods, results and conclusions of their research. Authors are allotted six minutes to present, followed by a four-minute discussion with the audience and moderators.

Though one mega structure containing fifteen original buildings and approximately 1.8 million square feet of space, the Academic Podium can be conceptualized as three distinct zones: the east end (physical science buildings such as Earth Science, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics ), the west end (social science buildings such as Humanities, Social Science, Education, and Business) and the middle portion (core support such as Performance Arts, Campus Center, Computing Center and the University Library). The Academic Podium buildings were all constructed in the mid- to late 1960s, and with the exception of a few selected improvements, are outdated and do not adequately meet current teaching and research facilities standards. The challenges are particularly acute in the physical science buildings, which are equipped with specialized equipment and fume hoods and utilize large amounts of energy, thus exacerbating mechanical system inefficiencies and deferred maintenance needs.

As part of the 2013-2018 Facilities Master Plan (FMP), the University at Albany is planning for the complete renovation of the academic podium over the next 30 years. The University at Albany, through the FMP, is identifying and planning the space, programmatic and capital needs for the complete rehabilitation and renovation of these buildings. Restoring the campus core will make the best use of existing facilities and help define new space requirements to support the advancement of the University's research and teaching goals.

Building 25 is undergoing rehabilitation and its completion will enable Building 27 to beemptied and gut rehabilitated as part of the University's multi-year critical maintenance plan.Similar initatives involving new construction that leverages our ability to gut renovate buildingson the east and in the center of the Academic Podium are envisioned as part of the FMP.

At the Olympic Games Antwerp 1920, Belgium's Victor Bonin took the first Olympic athletes' oath whilst standing on a platform in the middle of the Olympic Stadium. It was at the inaugural Empire Games (the forerunner to the Commonwealth Games) in Hamilton, Canada, in 1930, that a podium was first erected in the stadium for the athletics events. The winner stood on the top step (which had a wooden rail for the athletes to rest their hands on), while the second- and third-placed athletes stood one step below, to the right and left respectively. Flanked on both sides by uniformed military personnel, they were acclaimed by the crowd and saluted them in return, although they didn't actually receive their medals at this point.

Among those present in Hamilton was Count Henri de Baillet-Latour, who had been appointed IOC President five years earlier. Inspired by what he had seen, De Baillet-Latour would develop his own version of the podium. In May 1931, the IOC sent the Organising Committees for the Olympic Winter Games Lake Placid 1932 and the Olympic Summer Games Los Angeles 1932 ceremonial directives entitled "Medal presentations, victory ceremonies, flag-raising and loudspeaker announcements".

The following day, Shea was back on the podium as winner of the 1,500m. This time it was draped in a star-spangled cloth. He and his fellow speed-skating medallists were the only athletes in Lake Placid to receive their medals on the decorated podium directly after their events. Everyone else received theirs during the Closing Ceremony on 13 February, most notably the Norwegian figure skater Sonja Henie, the queen of the Lake Placid Games, who stole the headlines by wearing a magnificent fur coat.

The following summer in Los Angeles, the medal ceremonies and podiums evolved into something very close to what we see today. The Games organisers designed a podium with the numbers "1", "2" and "3" on the three steps. The medal ceremonies all took place at the Memorial Coliseum. In the case of the athletics events, the ceremonies took place immediately after they had finished, with the athletes standing on the podium in their official tracksuits as their national flags were raised, and the winner's national anthem was played. For events taking place elsewhere, the top three athletes travelled to the stadium specially to receive their medals.

Since then, podiums have taken different forms, with the Organising Committees allowed to come up with new design twists. We have seen round and square podiums, narrow ones, wide ones, and podiums made of different materials and in different colours. The one constant has been the presence of the Olympic rings.
