need help with Sun's Star Office

I bought my 9 year daughter a Compaq Windows XP based PC but did not
come with MS Word etc.

I am wondering if StarOffice will work well (like MS windows) on her
PC. StarOffice is a lot less than MS Word.

I am NOT technical so if it is going to be a lot of trouble for
someone like pls let me know. is it easy to install and run ?

Is there a place where I can download it for FREE or a small price.

If not, Maybe i could find a version of it on eBay.

Can anyone pls let me know.

Thanks
Kim

Kim,

To answer your question simply, yes to all.

There are two versions,

1) StarOffice, supported commercially, small fee. Available from Sun
for download at:

http://globalspecials.sun.com/

Available retail from the following location listed in link:

http://wwws.sun.com/software/star/staroffice/get/us.html

2) OpenOffice, free for download at:

http://download.openoffice.org/1.1.3/index.html

The home page is located at:

http://www.openoffice.org

OpenOffice is almost identical in functionality. Saved files can be
interchanged between both OpenOffice and StarOffice. StarOffice is
produced from OpenOffice sourcecode, refined and supported by Sun.
Additionally, Sun has some additional filters, commercially purchased
from third parties. The short answer to your question, is download
OpenOffice, it should be good enough for any work your daughter will
need. Installation is easy for both.

Kim I have been a MS Office user from the start , however Star
Office and open office is even better in my opinion , written by the
people for the people . I am now running Open Office instead of
Microsoft Office . Open Office it looks very similar so if you have
been used to MS office then you will have no trouble using the Star
or Open Office software. The download is easy to instal and also easy
to use . If you think of the money that Microsoft charge for their
versions and you can get this fantastic software free no contest .
good luck
Paul
