I currently run MS Office 97 and it's time for an upgrade. I don't like the
price of Office XP and have bought StarOffice6 to try out on my old
computer.
Can I install both MS Office and Star Office on the same computer for
trial/comparison? If yes, can I retain MS Office as the 'master' in the
short term such that if I wish to open an MS Office file, it will open in MS
Office and not Star Office? Presumably, I could change the priority order
subsequently? Could I install just the database (Adabas D)element of Star
Office so that it would run as a stand-alone database in its own right?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Yes, you can install StarOffice on a machine that already has MS Office
installed on it.

Hi,

Sure, StarOffice can run alongside Microsoft Office, and when you first
start out with StarOffice, it's probably best to run them both in this
manner. This way, you are able to compare them more easily and have the
functionality of the two products until you become more comfortable and
familiar with the features StarOffice provides.

When you go through the StarOffice install, the only thing you will need
to do is to make sure you do not select the option to have the file
associations set to Microsoft Office documents. Don't worry if you do,
as we can easily get around this at a later date!

Once StarOffice is installed, you should find Microsoft Office documents
will automatically open in Microsoft Office, and StarOffice documents in
StarOffice!

Although StarOffice is not 100% compatible with all the features +
functions contained within some Microsoft Office documents, pretty much
all Microsoft Office documents will open fine within StarOffice without
any problems.

With regards to installing Adabas D separately, this is possible, as you
can simply run the setup programme from within the Adabas directory
contained within the 'windows' folder (for example...). This will
install the Adabas D database service onto your system.

let me know if you have any more questions or come across any problems!

Digby,

StarOffice 6.0 and Microsoft Office will co-exist perfectly on the same
system. If you wish to keep the file associations of your MS documents,
simply select this when installing StarOffice, as you will be asked
explicitly what to do with those document associations.
If the associations have already been set to StarOffice and you wish to
reverse this, simply follow these steps:

1. Open the Windows-Explorer.
2. Select a file with the appropriate ending, for example,*.doc.
3. Prolong-click the [Shift] key and while pressing the right mouse button.
4. In the following context menu, select "Open with".
5. In the list of available programs in the following dialog, choose the
application that should open *.doc files (for example) in the future
(e.g., MS Word).
6. Select the option "Always use this application to open file type" (a
check mark should appear in front of this entry).
7. Confirm your changes and close the dialog with [OK].

From now on all files with the ending *.doc will be opened with MS
Word. Repeat the steps above for MS Excel and PowerPoint files.

As an alternative, you can use the original application to reset the the
assignment for the file types. To do so, proceed as follows:

1.Select the Windows [Start] button at the bottom left-hand corner of
your screen and choose "Run...".
2. In the following dialog, enter:

"c:\program files\microsoft office\office\<program.exe>" /regserver
In <program.exe>, the respective program needed for registering should
appear (e.g., winword.exe, excel.exe, powerpnt.exe).
You might need to adjust the path according to your local environment.
You can find the file and its path by using the [Browse] button.

3. Afterwards, click [OK] to start the program.

If necessary, you should repeat this procedure for all three programs.

The file types for MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint files will now be
relinked with MS Office and can be opened in the respective programs by
double-clicking the files in the
Windows-Explorer and directories.

Regarding your query about Adabas: Adabas is already a stand alone
product which is installed separately. Although, you will not be able to
work with it properly it as it has no user interface on it's own -
StarOffice works as the client.

I hope this helps you sorten things out.
