OpenOffice - Writer Fonts - Remote GS Printer

I am prototyping OpenOffice on our network.
We have generic printers that are front-ended with Ghostscript
so that general Postscript compliant applications can print.
We have generic printers that are front-ended with Ghostscript
so that general Postscript compliant applications can print.
We also have the general X11R6 Xorg display server and
its fonts.
The Writer program shows very few fonts available for use.
How can we get more fonts available for use with the Writer
program?
Do answers to the following configuation questions relate
to not having the Writer fonts?
Does the gzip *.gz compression on X11 font files make
a difference? Some of the font directories have compressed
files.
Must the X font server be installed and active? The Linux
platform is currently running without the xfs daemon.
