Hi Alex ,

Login as usual with your user description and call up the Installation script with the "./setup" command. Select an Installation method and an Installation directory. You will need write protection for the Installation directory.

If you would like to run a Network (multi-user) Installation (which is
recommended), start the Setup (as root) with the "/net" (-net since StarOffice 5.2) option. After a running the Network Installation, every user that wants to use StarOffice must use his/her user description in the bin directory of the Network Installation (without "/net" or "-net"). The Workstation Installation will be offered. This installs ca. 2 MB data per user in the respective Home directory.

Further information can be found in the Readme file and in the "setup.pdf" file.

Hope this helps.

Hello everybody,
I downloaded SO 5.2 as an only .bin file and installed it successfully (as a network + 2 users installation) on my RH linux 7.2. The problem arises when I try to modify my installation, doing again the setup procedure; in particular, after choosing to modify the previous installation, I get a message about not finding the installation path which is /usr/local/share/office52, smth like this "Cannot find file f_411", or sequent files (f_412, etc.).
Can you help me, please?

Hmmm...

Being spoiled by WinBill, I just opened file manager in Gnome and double
clicked the *.bin file.

Am I wrong? It worked for me?

Hi, I've downloaded office 5.2 and installed it. (RedHat Linux 7.0, GNOME)
When I try to run it though, I get a message:
"Cannot find file /home/username/office52/user/sofficerc"
I've looked in /user and the file is there, it appears to be a simple script file and looks intact (it makes sense when I read it).
Any suggestions?

Aarti, I think you might not understand what a "newbie" to Linux needs: step-by-step instructions that don't already assume a grasp of Linux! A phrase like "call up the Installation script with the "./setup" command" is incomprehensible to the Windows user who is used to double-clicking on an icon. I also find the "network installation" explanation fairly opaque. Moreover, I never saw a "read me" or "setup.pdf" file on the download site--perhaps one needs to actually install the product to access them? Is there a link you could give to these files? Or could you provide a step-by-step guide for Linux idiots?

To run any .bin file :

$ chmod 777 whatever-xyz.bin
$ ./whatever-xyz.bin

You have to type these command in a terminal and make sure you are in the directory where the .bin file exists.

There is a trick to get SO working on Free-BSD, you can download a port file which enables you to run LINUX software on Free BSD. It has been a while I read about it but try www.freebsd.org to find the answer.

I have 2 questions

1. I have the Red hat 7.1 Application CD and it has 3 copies of StarOffice on it:

5.2_01_569a19 5.2_33_569a19 5.2_34_569a20

Why are there 3?

2. I'm using the Gnome version of x. I've installed the software, and don't see it in my pop up menu, why?

I have installed StarOffice 5.2 on a Red Hat 7.2 platform. Everything works fine - Except for the Java support.
I have Java Runtime Environment Version 1.3.1_02 installed in /usr/java. As the ~/office52/README file directed.
I tried to set the path using StarOffice - Bookmarks-Java-Javasupport.. I entered the correct path in the dialog using
the browse function, the dialog responded with a message 'Java Home = /usr/java/jre1.3.1.02. (Yes, I did exit Staroffice,
before this) and I closed the dialog. Restarted Staroffice - but it did not work. Referring to the context help in Java Setup
Dialog, I manually edited the ~/office52/user/sofficerc file and entered the variables under [Java]. It still doesn't work.

Hello,

I just recently installed Staroffice to the \usr\Staroffice_52 directory under Linux (Red Hat 7.2) and it works fine under the root login. I have been trying to add the Staroffice programs under my jarndt login, but can't seem to access the programs that I know are there. Note the Staroffice is not installed under the root directory. Under Linus how do I configure the Staroffice to get to access the software under different user logins? Any help is appreciated.

Hi Chris
Once you have installed staroffice the first time you have the server side
installed with all the shared components. Each user will need to install
the user part. To do this try running /usr/local/office52/program/soffice.

Setup will run and you can customise user details etc. At the end of this a
"shortcut" will be added to KDE

The users executable is ~/Office52/soffice

Hope this helps

Well, Maria & others from Sun:

The network installation does NOT run as described.

1.First installation as root with option -net works fine.
2.But when I then call setup as ordinary user, it won't do anything but to complain "already installed in /opt/office52, please use setup to deinstall first."

I downloaded and installed server side StarOffice 5.2 fine. The program installed in /usr/local/office52/program. When I logged in as a user and tried to install client side, an error message came up stating that setup couldn't find a script file named setup.ins. It looked in the /usr/local/office52/program directory. I have done this three times now and got the same message each time. Where can the setup.ins file be? Is it installed with the server side installation? Any suggestion?

Hi,

I did the chmod to 777 on the so-5_2 file.

Then I did ./so-5_2-ga-bin-linux-en.bin /net

It starts glibc version: 2.2.4, creates a /tmp/sv001.tmp/f_000 file that is 7MB and them I get an error.

end of central directory signiture not found. either the file is not a zipfile, or it constitutes one disk of a multi part archive.
so-5_2...bin: Could ot unpack file /tmp/sv000.tmp/f_000.

The permissions on tmp is 777, sv001.tmp is 700 and the file f_000 is 644.

I've downloaded the 93 MB file several times thinking it was an FTP problem. I get the same error on each install.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Anand

Thank you for your enquiry about StarOffice.

Caldera Linux has officially not been tested with StarOffice, but we have known instances when
other users have got it working with StarOffice.

Installation Procedure:

Login as usual with your user description and call up the Installation script with the "./setup" command. Select an Installation method and an Installation directory. You will need write protection for the Installation directory.

If you would like to run a Network (multi-user) Installation (which is recommended), start the Setup (as root) with the "/net" (-net since StarOffice 5.2) option. The Workstation Installation
will be offered. This installs ca. 2 MB data per user in the respective Home directory.

Further information can be found in the Readme file and in the "setup.pdf" file.

Hope this helps.

Hi Greg,

It will be necessary to execute a chmod command to set the read, write and
execution rights.

For example:

% chmod 777 *.bin

Once you have set these rights, run the setup program and StarOffice 5.2 will
do the rest.

For further information, please read the Setup Guide provided for download on
the same website.

Dear all

Running the latest version of Linux Mandrake 8.2. I downloaded staroffice 5.2, the whole 100Meg, in one block (through my win98 machine as linux box not connected to web). It came as file named something.bin ... what to do with it?? What's wrong? Could you help?

Thank you in advance

Resolved my problem with install, by downloading the file a second time with a dedicated download software. Now it's installed! But it does not always launch when running the start shell.. (soffice). Still its looking great, fine tunning on its way.

Thema Re: Star Office 5.2 linux installation:

Hi Jhon,

the following procedure is the normal one on Linux (Solaris is quite
similar):

- login as root user
- change the access rights for the downloaded file

For example:
chmod 555 so-5_2-bin-linux-01-000.bin

- start the setup with "./so-5_2-bin-linux-01-000.bin -net"
- install to e.g., "/opt/office52"

- login as normal user
- start the setup from /opt/office52/program" without any parameters
- install to e.g., "/home/<user>/office52"

Now you can start StarOffice from your home dir or with an icon on your
Linux desktop.
