Login as usual with your user description and call up the Installation script with the "./setup" command. Select an Installation method and an Installation directory. You will need write protection for the Installation directory.
If you would like to run a Network (multi-user) Installation (which is
recommended), start the Setup (as root) with the "/net" (-net since StarOffice 5.2) option. After a running the Network Installation, every user that wants to use StarOffice must use his/her user description in the bin directory of the Network Installation (without "/net" or "-net"). The Workstation Installation will be offered. This installs ca. 2 MB data per user in the respective Home directory.
Further information can be found in the Readme file and in the "setup.pdf" file.
Hope this helps.

Being spoiled by WinBill, I just opened file manager in Gnome and double
clicked the *.bin file.
Am I wrong? It worked for me?

Hi all
I'm download Staroffice 5.2 and I want to install in Mandrake 8.1. When I install it, the program say me that it will be create a new icon to run it but when a finish the installation program there isn't icon, what can I do?
I need to install as a "root"?
(sorry but my english isn't very good)
$ chmod 777 whatever-xyz.bin
$ ./whatever-xyz.bin
You have to type these command in a terminal and make sure you are in the directory where the .bin file exists.

I have 2 questions
1. I have the Red hat 7.1 Application CD and it has 3 copies of StarOffice on it:
5.2_01_569a19 5.2_33_569a19 5.2_34_569a20
Why are there 3?
2. I'm using the Gnome version of x. I've installed the software, and don't see it in my pop up menu, why?
Steve
There are three files may be because the CD comprises of :
1.StarOffice Player.
2.Adabas.
3.StarOffice5.2
Thanks
Tom
Thank you.

Just write:
./so-5_2-ga-bin-linux-en.bin /net

I just recently installed Staroffice to the \usr\Staroffice_52 directory under Linux (Red Hat 7.2) and it works fine under the root login. I have been trying to add the Staroffice programs under my jarndt login, but can't seem to access the programs that I know are there. Note the Staroffice is not installed under the root directory. Under Linus how do I configure the Staroffice to get to access the software under different user logins? Any help is appreciated.

Hi Chris
Once you have installed staroffice the first time you have the server side
installed with all the shared components. Each user will need to install
the user part. To do this try running /usr/local/office52/program/soffice.
Setup will run and you can customise user details etc. At the end of this a
"shortcut" will be added to KDE
The users executable is ~/Office52/soffice
Hope this helps

I'm in a similar situation and did everything said above, and my Star Office won't install. The command prompt says ""cannot execute finary file."
Thank you very much.
John.
The network installation does NOT run as described.
1.First installation as root with option -net works fine.
2.But when I then call setup as ordinary user, it won't do anything but to complain "already installed in /opt/office52, please use setup to deinstall first."
P.S.: I am not new to Linux.
I did the chmod to 777 on the so-5_2 file.
Then I did ./so-5_2-ga-bin-linux-en.bin /net
It starts glibc version: 2.2.4, creates a /tmp/sv001.tmp/f_000 file that is 7MB and them I get an error.
end of central directory signiture not found. either the file is not a zipfile, or it constitutes one disk of a multi part archive.
so-5_2...bin: Could ot unpack file /tmp/sv000.tmp/f_000.
The permissions on tmp is 777, sv001.tmp is 700 and the file f_000 is 644.
I've downloaded the 93 MB file several times thinking it was an FTP problem. I get the same error on each install.
Thanks for your help.
Brad.
Thank you for your interest in StarOffice Software.
The exact size of the download file is 93.10 MB. You don't have the completesoftware with you. We suggest you to download the file once again, but now try downloading from a different server.
Hope this helps.

Caldera Linux has officially not been tested with StarOffice, but we have known instances when
other users have got it working with StarOffice.

Maria, just thought that you might like to update the disclaimer

"guaranty" should be "guarantee" I think.

Thank you for your interest in StarOffice software.
Your download is not complete. You have downloaded 8 files out of the 10. You need to download the other 2 files and then start the installation by initiating so-5_2-ga-bin-linux-en-001.
It will be necessary to execute a chmod command to set the read, write and
execution rights.
For example:
% chmod 777 *.bin
Once you have set these rights, run the setup program and StarOffice 5.2 will
do the rest.
For further information, please read the Setup Guide provided for download on
the same website.

Running the latest version of Linux Mandrake 8.2. I downloaded staroffice 5.2, the whole 100Meg, in one block (through my win98 machine as linux box not connected to web). It came as file named something.bin ... what to do with it?? After a few hours on the web, I unerdstood I had to set its properties to 777, which I did succesfully. now I am supposed to do ./filename.bin, but the answer is "cannot execute binary file". What's wrong? Could you help?
Thank you in advance
Lionel
Lionel (hard to be a beginner on Linux, but cool)
Hi Jhon,
the following procedure is the normal one on Linux (Solaris is quite
similar):
- login as root user
- change the access rights for the downloaded file
For example:
chmod 555 so-5_2-bin-linux-01-000.bin
- start the setup with "./so-5_2-bin-linux-01-000.bin -net"
- install to e.g., "/opt/office52"
- login as normal user
- start the setup from /opt/office52/program" without any parameters
- install to e.g., "/home/<user>/office52"
Now you can start StarOffice from your home dir or with an icon on your
Linux desktop.
HTH
