How do I add characters/people/animals to StarLogo? And where do I get
them?

You can select different characters to use in StarLogo TNG by clicking
the Edit Breeds button in the upper left-hand corner. Right now we
don't support importing your own characters from outside StarLogo TNG,
but this is a feature we hope to include in the next version. Hope
this helps!

If you want to add more characters NOT using the new tool we're
making, you can copy properly formatted 3D assets into the "models"
folder in the installation folder. However, "properly formatted" is a
big catch, because there are a lot of steps! Someone has developed a
tutorial for importing shapes with animations, and it's here:

http://education.mit.edu/drupal/starlogo-tng/shape-importer

Also, for adding static (non-animated) OBJ files, Neil Winterburn of
Flunstellas Creative has created this guide for exporting textured OBJ
files from Blender into StarLogo TNG:

http://www.justassociation.co.uk/?q=the_loop/blender_to_starlogo_tex_obj_export

However, as Nicole said, hopefully in the next version we will have
our KML importer tool ready, which allows you to add shapes you create
in Google SketchUp!

The link for properly formatted .obj files doesn't work. Is there another link? or a tutorial?

Hi Shamus,

Sorry about that! We revamped our website, and many of the old TNG guides are now here instead: http://web.mit.edu/mitstep/projects/starlogo-tng/learn.html

That said, the specific guide you are looking for doesn't seem to have survived the move! So I'll explain the steps here:

1) Open the folder where StarLogo TNG is installed. Look for the "models" folder, and open that.
2) Find the category where you want to add the new shape, for example, "people". Open that folder.
3) Create a new folder alongside the existing folders. Name the new folder the name of the shape.
4) Copy your .obj (and, if needed, .mtl) file(s) into this new folder.
5) Open nearby folders until you find one with an .obj in it. Look at the other files in the folder. In particular, notice the icon file and the "model.slb" file. You will need to create new versions of these for your new folder as well.

See these troubleshooting guides, too, to get your model to appear with the right size and orientation, or to delete one:

I hope this helps. Let me know if you run into any issues.

Best,
--Daniel
