I just joined this group. Last week I'd been considering the issue of
string representations and operations on strings, and considering
issues like string and regular expression performance in Erlang. I had
started to explore the possibility of an Erlang ICU binding because
the daunting complexity of dealing properly with various character
types. Just reading some of the reports at unicode.org about string
collation and normalization made my head hurt :)

Then I found this project which sounds really promising. I understand
it's early days but I wanted to say that I was interested and that
this has the potential to grow into something quite useful. Eventually
I would like to see Erlang complete string- and
regular-expression-processing benchmarks competitively and correctly.

Welcome, J. Well done on finding the project as well, before I
announced it to the community. :)

I considered writing an implementation of Unicode in pure Erlang from
scratch, but dropped that idea very quickly -- as soon as I learned a
little about normalization.

ICU is fast, and Starling should and can be nearly as fast. Speed is
not a priority at the moment, but it's definitely something I'll spend
some time on later.

Cheers
