Sheriff to open substation in Brooker
The Brooker Town Council, earlier this month, approved a request by Sheriff Bob Milner and Brooker Marshal Tommie Raulerson to make the town’s old city hall ava
ilable to Mr. Milner’s deputy sheriffs. Last month, City Clerk Charlene Thomas and the town council moved their operations to Brooker’s new community center, a
cross the railroad tracks from the old city hall. Marshal Raulerson then took over the older structure.
Sheriff Milner said the change should increase his office’s the level of service to Brooker area residents.
“What it will do, hopefully,” he said, “is keep the deputies in the Brooker area when they are patrolling and responding to calls for service.”
Mr. Milner added that now, deputies must return to Starke to process paperwork and download data from their laptop computers during their shifts, and the additi
on of the Brooker office space will cut down on the commuting between the western community and the Sheriff’s office.
“Typically, a deputy has about an hour and a half’s worth a paperwork he has to do each shift,” explained Mr. Milner. “And he can’t do all of it at the end of
the shift. Having that office space will allow us to keep the deputy in Brooker while he completes that paperwork, in addition to cutting out the commuting tim
e.”
Mr. Milner added that the office will help his deputies gather evidence during investigations. “Sometimes, you have people that don't want you coming into thei
r house. This change will give us a place to meet and interview witnesses.”
The sheriff said the availability of the office’s landline telephone will also assist his deputies. Mr. Milner’s personnel are equipped with cellular phones bu
t the reception in Brooker is poor, and he added that many times, witnesses do not want their names mentioned over the radio.
“We’ve actually been using the pay phone at the minute market,” he said. But added that using that telephone carries its own privacy concerns.
The town council approved a six month trial period for the substation, and will evaluate the arrangement at the end of the six months.
