Nadija came back from the washroom refreshed and with her head clear. She hadn't had any war memories plaguing her for years now. It had seemed to heal as she worked on the colonies over time, so she wasn't sure why it had resurfaced all of a sudden. She put it out of her mind with a deep breath as she found Dr. Janor had come in.
"Good morning, Dare."
Janor's face lit up. "Dr. Lyra! Just the woman I was looking for... How are you this morning?"
"I'm alright." She glanced around like there was something missing. "Where's Kain? I left him right here..."
"Oh, he was here when I got here and he fixed the scanner. He needed to go eat, though." _I wonder if he wasn't feeling well like myself._ The doctor looked at the scanner happily and patted it. "I was hoping you would possibly use this on me for a bit of a trial run. Not feeling so well today." He admitted.
"Really? Well, have a seat and tell me what's ailing you." She was glad to have Dare as a volunteer model. Nadija busied herself pulling some of the adjustable monitors into place and opening his medical file.
As requested, he took a seat and waited as she readied the scanner. "Well, I suppose I shouldn't say I don't feel well as I feel fine. Or I think I do. But I'm - seeing things. And that isn't precisely normal for me." Dare chuckled knowing how mad 'seeing things' sounded even with his caveat added...
"What kind of things? Like spots in your vision or lights?" Nadija set the scanner for a general body scan and to map out Dare's brain and eyes and then turned back to him.
"Not exactly. More like a person attacking me that I couldn't sense and who apparently wasn't there." Janor said sheepishly.
Nadija fought the sudden urge to blurt 'you too?' and instead asked, "Is it from a memory? Have you been feeling stressed?" The computer was spinning detailed tapestries of Dare's brain, it's activity, and charts of his chemistry. None of it was looking unusual, although she was noticing a spike in adrenaline as though Dare had just come down from a scare.
He shook his head. "I've never seen that man or been in that situation before. And I haven't been stressed except from perhaps a decided lack of sleep. That is what I believe this might be but didn't want to pass up the opportunity to try out the new equipment." Dare waited patiently as the scanner continued its work eager to see the end result.
"Did it happen just now? Because you have a slightly elevated fight or flight hormone reading."
"It did. I was examining the scanner and he was inexplicably - there. I've never experienced anything like that and it was thoroughly disconcerting."
"Well if it's the only time it's happened, it's probably just your imagination. If you were anyone else, I'd prescribe a short talk with the counselor, but maybe a full night's rest will do you well. Why haven't you been resting? Is something bothering you?"
Dare looked at his fellow professional and actually blushed. "It's more like someone is bothering me. And I am enjoying the bothering..." It was difficult to be subtle but he found himself for once not wanting to be forthcoming with information and risk the disapproval of Dr. Lyra whom he respected greatly.
Cordellia. She frowned. The woman was sexually predatory- it was written all over her- and Dare was clearly a romantic. He was going headlong into a broken heart. Still, she bit her tongue. She preferred not to speak if she didn't have anything nice to say (even if he could sense everything she thought) so she tried to be positive instead. "Why don't you go put your feet up in your office and catch a nap. It's quiet for now. I can manage."
He sensed her disapproval immediately and sighed in disappointment. "I take it the scanner readings were fine?" Dare stood, knowing they were fine as Lyra would otherwise not have counseled a simple nap but he really wanted to see the action the scanner had to offer... "I'd like to see then maybe I will take that nap."
"Certainly." Nadija stepped back to make room for him as he rose. "You're an excellent model. Very good health. But I can see here that you have another kind of fatigue, Doctor." She motioned to the region of the Betazoid brain responsible for telepathy blocking. "You need to let your guard down more often. Your paracortex is highly active, but you're so restrained that your telepathic hormone activity is overwhelming you." She'd seen that before in Betazoids who were trying to live peaceably with non telepaths. "You need to find a regular outlet. Someone a little more deeply emotional and personal to allow your guard down with. Or else you're going to start seeing long term damage."
Dare nodded as he looked over his readings. "I do need that but I'm so accustomed now to blocking on a consistent basis that it seems more normal to me than when I was on Betazed recently and having to work hard not to block so as not to offend." He pulled up a few more results to peruse before continuing. "I have been working harder at actually keeping my blocks down where I'm comfortable, like here for example, but haven't been entirely successful." The doctor looked at the results one more time before turning to Lyra. "Why don't you sit and we'll have another go with our new 'toy'. Wouldn't hurt to test it more..."
"I'm afraid I prove the cliche about doctors true. I make a terrible patient." Nadija said half-jokingly, but climbed up all the same. He was the boss after all. "Alright."
Janor laughed. "It is hard to admit when we're ailing, isn't it?" He went about the business of readying the machinery to take her readings when he saw - something. Then he heard - something. A soft weeping. He sensed no others in the room than Nadija. The doctor looked more closely to where he thought he had seen something and saw what looked to be a human woman crying over a bundle that appeared to be an infant. And just as quickly as she had appeared she was gone. He looked back to Dr. Lyra and said, "Perhaps we can do this later as I think that I may just need that rest, after all."
"Alright...." Nadija slid down and watched him go. She had taken the sound to be a whine in the machinery but she had heard it just the same. She double checked where she thought the sound had been coming from and decided to ask Kain to have a look at it to make sure there weren't any parts loose inside...
