"Ma'am?" Alyssa began, waiting for the nod of acknowledgement before she continued on. "How much do we know about the nature of the shield itself? The gate's had problems connecting before, when the wormhole's tried to pass through things it's not supposed to. What are the chances that they'll interact... badly?"

Carter offered her usual tight smile at the question. "There is, unfortunately, an excellent chance. Without getting into the eye-glazing details--" all those years of working with O'Neill had started to pay off "--the ways in which the shield would have to work to block both energy and matter, and yet have been created in such a way that it didn't push matter out of the way when it was formed... well, they're off in some interesting back corners of theoretical quantum physics. At that stage, it could impact the wormhole in any number of ways. And if the shield formed at just the right spot when it comes to the formation of the event horizon..."

She shrugged and smiled at Howard. "The only thing I'm relatively sure of is that it won't cause localized time dilation. Probably." She scanned the room again, looking in particular at the officers present. "Any other questions?"
