Having just shrugged into his entirely too heavy rucksack, PJ stood at
the base of the ramp, waiting for the singularity to appear. He
heard the doors open and close again. he looked up to see one of his
fellow field operatives, Lt. Esme Dutton. Even though PJ wasn't
enlisted, he took no small degree of pride in the fact that he was one
of the few scientists who actually went out onto *alien* worlds,
rather than just stay behind and play or study the items that the
field teams brought back. Granted, he wasn't a total bad-ass like the
military-trained combat officers, but still...

He sidled up to the young marine and gave her a nudge. "G'Mornin,
Lieutenant. Ready to get back on the road again?" He gave her a
wink, then shifted to balance his rucksack, which threatened to drag
him over just by being off balance.

"You think we're ready for this, ma'am?"

Benson turned and nodded a curt greeting to her second in command. Her
lip twisted at the question, one that echoed her own. "Not in the
slightest. But we'll do it anyway, same as always." She shrugged it off,
trying to effect a casual air that didn't sit entirely comfortably on
her. But what choice did she have? Dutton was new, green, good at what
she did, but... not enough experience to shake off the weirdness that
always seemed to appear on the other side of the gate.

"Even with all the intel," she continued, nodding at Ockman as he sidled
up close to them, "there's no such thing as 'ready' when it comes to
gate travel." She hesitated, then, pitched so that the scientist could
hear them as well, "remind me to tell you the story about Qetesh's
dinosaurs, at some point. For the record, dimetrodons are /fast/
sons-of-bitches."
