Hyperlink Base

If I create a document in Microsoft Word, set the hyperlink base, then
insert a hyperlink in the document, the link becomes live using the base URL
and the hyperlink path. I can save that document as a .doc file or as .rtf
and the hyperlink base settings stay intact.

I need to do the same thing in StarOffice. When I open the Word document
with these settings, the hyperlink path is appended to the document's
physical location on the machine no matter what I do. I've tried setting the
URL in the File->Properties->Internet area, but it does nothing. I've also
tried setting the global options to save links relative to the file system,
the Internet and both.

I've read every document and help file I can find on StarOffice and talked
with support, but can't seem to find anyone who knows how to make this work.
It's not rocket science.
