Tracer microspheres (TM) allow the measurement of regional tissue blood flow. For this purpose the tissue must be cut into the regions selected for measurements. We describe a simple tissue cutter, that greatly facilitates accurate and reproducible cutting of fresh tissue. We have demonstrated its usefulness for obtaining measurements of myocardial blood flow in different layers of the left ventricular free wall of hearts of anesthetized cats and conscious rabbits. Since complete trapping of the TM is essential for blood flow measurements by this method, we investigated the minimal TM size needed by comparing results obtained with different size microspheres. 25 and 15 micrometer TM were trapped equally well by all layers of the left ventricle, but TM smaller than 15 micrometers were not trapped completely. From the size distribution of the 7-10 micrometer TM, we estimated that the functional diameter of the largest capillaries was somewhat smaller (about 7.6 micrometer) in the subepicardial (epi) than in the subendocardial (endo) layer (7.9 micrometer) in both species. When measured with 15 micrometer TM, intramyocardial distribution of blood flow was comparable to that reported for dogs and sheep. In open chest cats, the endo/epi ratio was 1.25 and 1.28, and in conscious rabbits it was 1.35. We conclude that TM with diameters between 10 and 15 micrometers are suitable for measuring intramyocardial blood flow in cats' and rabbits' hearts, and that unlike in dogs and sheep, 7-10 micrometer TM cannot be used.

I picked up a 15 kg bag of birdseed from Costco for $11.99 (because it was cheaper than the 5 kg bag another local supermarket was selling for $17.99). I got a 12 pack of gelatine for around $6.00, and I already had some cookie cutters, so all in all this project cost me less than $20.00 and would yield at least 60 ornaments before I ran out of gelatin, with birdseed to spare. Firstly I created a step-down by simply sawing the step-down as shown. I bevelled the adjacent higher surface to allow the sharping hone access across the whole bevel without tripping. You can actually create a second step-down at an angle for sharpening spear-point cutters on the same platform. The first step-down is for square cutters and acts as a butt stop to push and secure the cutter up against. By placing the cutter with the blade overhanging just a mil or two the hone makes sharpening these otherwise awkward cutters a breeze regardless of the make. In preparation for some lectures over the weekend I sharpened six different makes of router cutters perfectly with no obstruction at all. Sharpening the spear-point cutters simply means using the same bevelled step but turning the support to do the second bevel to the opposite side.
I was lucky and I have a 2 for 1 sharpening jig now. The scrap I used to make my knife jig was long enough to make a router cutter jig on the opposite end. I marked the knife side with a blue marker, and the router side with a red marker. One small scrap of wood makes two helpful jigs.
Woodturning is the craft of using the wood lathe with hand-held tools to cut a shape that is symmetrical around the axis of rotation. Like the potter's wheel, the wood lathe is a simple mechanism which can generate a variety of forms. The operator is known as a turner, and the skills needed to use the tools were traditionally known as turnery. In pre-industrial England, these skills were sufficiently difficult to be known as 'the misterie' of the turners guild. The skills to use the tools by hand, without a fixed point of contact with the wood, distinguish woodturning and the wood lathe from the machinists lathe, or metal-working lathe. Items made on the lathe include tool handles, candlesticks, egg cups, knobs, lamps, rolling pins, cylindrical boxes, Christmas ornaments, bodkins, knitting needles, needle cases, thimbles, pens, chessmen, spinning tops; legs, spindles and pegs for furniture; balusters and newel posts for architecture; baseball bats, hollow forms such as woodwind musical instruments, urns, sculptures; bowls, platters, and chair seats.
The raw edges of the aluminum liner can be sharp! Consider wearing gloves while you work with the material. However, we always find that DIY cookie cutters made from oven liners are the sturdiest and the best at cutting through any thicker doughs.

- 1 cup of all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup of sea salt
- 1/2 cup of water
- Preheat oven to 250 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Pour all ingredients into a mixing bowl, starting with the flour and salt and then water. Mix well.
- Dust surface with flour and knead until the dough is not sticky and easily rollable.
- Roll out the dough to approximately 1/4 inch thickness.
- Cut out with cookie cutters. Or mold into desired shapes.
- Lay on a clean no grease cookie sheet. Poke small hole on top of ornament.
- Bake in the oven for approximately 2 hours until completely dry.
- Once cool, paint and decorate!
- Once dried, thread a clear fishing line or ribbon through the hole and hang up on tree!
