I unwind with: Meditation. One of the things I've learnt over my time is that in the cultures I've studied and reported on, most of the extraordinary ones have some form of breath practice. I recommend everyone learn some form of meditation; just from a science perspective, breath is incredibly powerful.
COVID-19 has shifted my thinking: Now I appreciate being around people. I'm not super social. I don't go to events. I don't go to parties. I'm pretty much with my family, that's it, that's all I do. And this reminded me of the importance of opening up to others, it has changed that for me. When the introverts are complaining about being alone, you know you've got problems! Todd Sampson appears on Gruen on ABC and iview.
What I'm watching: Two things, one by choice and one not by choice. Not by choice: . My two young girls are obsessed with vampires. I don't want to like it, but I'm so sucked in now. I'll be getting ready for bed and hear something, then I'll go out and say, "what happened?" The problem with that show is they all die and come back to life. So you go through the whole emotional thing of they're dead and then next week they're back because they're vampires. By choice: The documentary series about NXIVM, a sex cult in America that involved a couple of high-profile Hollywood actresses. What I find fascinating is that it starts from how the founder, Keith Raniere, lured them in and the techniques he used. He had a thing called "collateral" — anything from a naked photo or a video of you saying "my husband abused me" — then whenever you tried to release yourself from the cult, he would have that to force you back in. It's truly fascinating how smart, intelligent people get lured into these cults. My mind is totally occupied by The Vampire Diaries and The Vow and they couldn't be any more different. The Vow is definitely scarier, for sure.
What I'm listening to: I've been listening to Bob Dylan for 40 years. I probably listen to , his comeback album from 1997, every day. At the time, everyone thought Bob Dylan was done — he hadn't done any music for many years, people said he'd had his time as a folk singer and was no longer relevant. Then he comes back with Time Out of Mind, which is a smash hit and amazing music. I spend the rest of my time listening to podcasts. At the moment, it's . He's a medical professional really into the latest, cutting-edge stuff about the mind and body. I've been listening to one about sleep and basically how three nights of poor sleep has the ability to lower your IQ. It's not really taught as a skill, yet it's so important for your health.
What I'm reading: and Gotta Get Theroux This — I hate the name. Both are autobiographies. Tim Winton's writing is so brilliant. He arguably is the best we have in this country and one of the best in the world. For Louis Theroux, I relate to him as a filmmaker and I see his book as helping me be better at filmmaking. He has an incredible ability to get the story without putting himself in the middle. Louis does no pieces to camera, he finds these people and just gives them enough space to say too much. He didn't start as a filmmaker. His awkwardness and weirdness, what became his trademark, were things he was embarrassed of in the beginning.
I wrote a novel during the pandemic: It was inspired by two things — my mother dying and by free time and not filming. I started to write about fear, which is something you could say I specialise in, the ability to manage anxiety and fear in situations. That was a new hobby — or therapy. It's not something I've always wanted to do, it's just something I tried my hand at. It may never see the light of day, my kids may read it. I don't know.
Occult teens sucking face and sucking blood have been around forever. It gets easy in a post-Twilight world to trace it all back to Edward and Bella but long before Twilight there was Buffy, Sabrina, and so much more. Yet, with this long history of potential influences, something about First Kill makes it feel almost directly connected to The CW's The Vampire Diaries.
Unfortunately, despite being deliciously soapy, full of drama, and an improved evolution of the formula, the Netflix series got the ax last year in August when the streamer announced the First Kill would not be getting a follow-up season. Considering the first season ended with a plot twist and cliffhanger of sorts, it's disappointing news. Now we'll never know how Cal and Juliette get back together (because, obviously, they were going to get back together.) The biggest changes that First Kill made to the teen vampire romance subgenre wasn't even about the queer romance in a space that is so often dominated by heterosexual couples, but actually leaning into those things that always make us scratch our heads when it comes to these shows.
@avatarofdeath: I don't know who Alucard is so you may have to fill me in with his feats. But elijah can easily lift thousands of pounds, not sure exactly how fast but has out ran explosions, and has an incredible healing factor with a very durable skeleton. Not to mention mind control upon eye contact.
@boc: I've never seen Elijah lifting thousands of pounds but Alucard has both telekinesis, superhuman strength and was able to blitz his father Dracula while leaving several afterimages of himself. He also had the durability to be thrown through cement walls in the castle while fighting his father. He is from the Netflix series Castlevania.
@avatarofdeath: A werewolf broke free from chains that were supposed to hold up to 5,000 pounds. In this universe vampires are stronger than werewolves, vampires also gain strength with age, and Elijah is 1,000 years old making him many times stronger than a werewolf.
@ourmanuel: Exactly. Plus Elijah is a great vampire combatant. This can be seen when he trains Gia. It's also the reason why he can pull his own weight with his physically superior brother Klaus. The other siblings don't do well against Klaus.
Thousands of pounds of pressure flying at a few thousand miles per hour would take this dudes head off. Elijah already did something like this to a vampire; He decapitated a 500 (give or take a few years) year old vampire with a slap. Even though the older the vampire the more durable their skeleton is.
@boc: Can Elijah even compel vampires that are as powerful as him? I've only ever seen originals use it on lower vampires. As far as resisting mental manipulation he has done it in the games. They are also considered the same Alucard.
@avatarofdeath: Compulsion has nothing to do with physical power, it depends on the minds strength to resist it. In the TVD universe the older the vampire is the more they can resist. I'm not sure if this applies to Alucard' s universe but either way it proves that Elijah's mental abilities are very powerful. Therefore even with Alucard resisting in that game I don't think he will be able to resist Elijah.
I also have not seen any signs of skilled h2h from Alucard, just brute strength and speed. Whereas Elijah was trained by his Viking father before becoming a Vampire and has learned some martial arts over his years as a vampire.
@boc Alucard is a highly skilled swordfighter, being at bare minimum at Trevor's level. Oh and the whip there? That causes demons bigger than humans to flat out explode by hitting them. Alucard just kinda tanked it
No its not. The continuities are separate, and distinct in several areas, although the Castlevania series IS based on 3, it has elements of SOTN and its own versions of certain characters like Carmila and Isaac. Ill tag @boc for this as well, because its misinformation that needs to stop.
Shit like garlic and whatever and crosses doesn't cut it. Furthermore, the more powerful a vampire is the more resistant to these things (except staking) they are, whereas weak ones dont even need to be killed by this stuff from what it seems.
For example, stuff like stabbing doesn't really even phase the likes of Alucard and Dracula (the vampiric high tiers) while they have a very high resistance to holy stuff and fire. While they are physically durable to get thrown through meters of stone and be more or less fine.
Not as shown, no. The game continuity is not the same as the TV continuity, or else this wouldn't really be fair. Game Alucard has stuff like teleportation, summoning, hellfire, soul stealing, mist form, and durability and strength off the charts (the vampire killer whip was basically a sentient holy McGuffin item in the games, created to specifically end the vampire race. Had Alucard had gotten off with but a small cut from that, it would be an absurd feat)
@decaf_wizard: The fact that durability increases is something that happens with Elijah too, he gains durability through age and he is 1000 years old. And the only thing that affects Elijah on this list is wood, a stake through the heart will incapacitate him but won't kill him. Only a stake made from the white oak tree that doesn't exist anymore.
