Palo Market Fest, a vibrant and eclectic event in Barcelona, is a celebration of creativity, culture, and community. This unique market-cum-festival fuses art, music, food, and fashion in a lively and inclusive atmosphere.
One of the highlights of Palo Market Fest is the food and drink vendors. You can sample delicious local cuisine, including Catalan specialties like paella, churros, and cava. You can also find international flavors from around the world, from Mexican tacos to Japanese sushi. And of course, no market would be complete without a selection of refreshing cocktails and craft beers to enjoy while you browse.
What sets Palo Market Fest apart from other markets in Barcelona is its focus on sustainability and eco-friendliness. Many of the vendors are chosen based on their commitment to using eco-friendly materials and production methods. This makes Palo Market Fest a great destination for conscious consumers who are looking to shop and support local businesses while minimizing their environmental impact.
One of the great things about Palo Market Fest is that it changes locations throughout the city, which gives visitors a chance to explore different neighborhoods and see different parts of Barcelona. Some of the past locations have included the gardens of the Maritime Museum, the historic district of Poble Espanyol, and the trendy neighborhood of Gracia.
Palo Alto Barcelona is an old factory from the 19th century that has been converted into design and architecture studios and which opens up to host a market once a month: Palo Market Fest, where fashion, signature designs, music and gastronomy come together for one weekend a month.
Creativity, craftsmanship and exclusivity are the common link between the participating brands, which are small local businesses. Based on the street market concept, gastronomy also plays an important part at this market, where you'll find stalls selling organic street food, accessories, jewellery, craft products, books, discs and more.
Some of the resident creators with studios in the Palo Alto space (converted from one of the old factories of Poblenou) will be opening their doors to showcase and sell their work. The inspiration may come from international street markets, but the hope is that this event will highlight the particular creativity and sophistication that Barcelona has to offer.
Vendors selling their wares along the street or out of make-shift tents are common sights in Colombia, but a certain type of Latin American charm arises when people come together to sell their goods at a massive market like Paloquemao.
As the story goes, Paloquemao got its name from a large dry tree in the area that was burnt down (palo = trunk; quemado = burned) and from then on Bogotanos used the name as a point of reference. The origin of the marketplace dates back to 1946. The market has been in its current location since 1967.
Sure, Colombia has giant supermarket chains similar to Wal-Mart or K-Mart, but many Colombians still buy their food from traditional markets. A visit to Paloquemao is a way to support local businesses and get a glimpse of Colombian authenticity. It is also a focal point where the produce of the Caribbean and Pacific coasts, the fertile Andes and the tropical jungle meld together. The market is divided into sections: flowers; fruit, vegetables and aromatic herbs; and meat and fish.
Wandering through the outdoor flower market is a colourful and fragrant experience. The variety of fresh cut flowers on offer is both immense and amazingly beautiful, there are so many varieties to choose from including orchids, roses, crocuses and the exotic bird of paradise - all at incredibly low prices. Colombia is the leading producer and exporter of flowers in South America and the second largest exporter of flowers in the world.
While much of the produce in big-box stores are not ready to eat the day of your purchase, Paloquemao offers fruits and veggies that can be consumed on the spot. The knowledgeable vendors can help you select the ripest produce and some will even provide free samples.
Just as in many markets around the world, never accept the first price suggested. Paloquemao is a great place to hone your haggling skills. We applaud the visitors who can count to 10 in Spanish, but you might want to brush up on larger numbers if you want to haggle. Remember that goods in Colombia do not cost 1 or 2 pesos like they would cost 1 or 2 dollars or pounds. Instead, a large avocado could cost 2 thousand pesos or a bunch of grapes could cost 3,500 pesos. Large numbers in Spanish can be intimidating to non-native speakers, but learning them can help you get better deals.
Visitors have the chance to chow down on a variety of arepas, sausages and soup containing huge parts of the chicken, just how Colombians like it. Dessert should not be passed over, as the market offers a sweet caramel-like paste called arequipe and of course there is always the egg custard called flan waiting to appease your sweet tooth.

Palo Market Fest is the benchmark event in Barcelona and one of the most important in Catalonia. It acts as a speaker for dozens of brands looking to make themselves known, consolidate in their sector, or simply use the powerful sales channel offered by the market.
From decorative pieces to sustainable fashion, the range of products we can find in Palo Alto varies from edition to edition. Its organization works under two essential premises: that quality of the product, and the diversity of products.
Discovering new projects, new forms of creation, and innovative proposals is one of the aims of the festival, and the careful selection of the participating brands supports this goal. It is no coincidence, then, that the festival has established itself as one of the most valued platforms to promote emerging professionals and new creators. Innovation is a key point for the festival, and the environment of the Gal i Puigsech factory creates the perfect setting for the consumer to discover brands, projects, and new creative techniques.
