we only gain certification in the advanced or on the basic course too?

I think that Andrew Ng will issue a certificate to anyone who
completes either track. But since Stanford University doesn't issue
the certificate, it probably won't be very useful.

If I understand it right it will show in which percentile you end up
in. This may be even more true of the AI class where the fraction of
people to get 100% on their homework will be smaller. This might have
some small signalling value, especially if you later use the knowledge
gained to do neat stuff. Depending on how challenging the classes will
become or rather what the kind of people who will stick through them
will be like, it may be a reasonable IQ and perhaps even
conscientiousness proxy. But honestly programming and computer science
in general is currently basically a hobby for me, so I have no
experience with the IT industry.
