Please review the following and let us know what the local government is going to do to enforce the law for Lexington Citizens in accordance with State law that has interpreted local government duty to do what is best for the citizens of the governed terriority, not the citizens of foreign states. We need to know how much money the local government is illegally spending for illegal aliens in the community in violation of federal immigration law and state law that requires local government to spend its money for what is in the best interest of its citizens. Failure to comply with the law can not be something our local government can tolerate.

It is unconsciencalbe that our taxes would be increased for sewer funding when we must pay for benefits to illegal alein Mexican citizens in the community. Please advise what will be done to bring Lexington in compliance with the state law on home rule in accordance with state appellate court rulings. Time is running out for local governmnet officials to comply with and enforce the law.

We will wait anxiously for what you Promised Us Mayor Newberry. You Promised you would enforce the law. Let's see you do it.

We are Lexingtonians
La Voz de KY |
lavo...@yahoo.com

What does it mean to be a Lexingtonian? Is simply living and working in this city enough to call it home and take on it's name? Or does being a Lexingtonian mean something else? Is it a vision that some people have and other's do not? Are all Lexingtonians created equal, each carrying the same load and contributing the same amount to Lexington's future?

These are questions that we must begin to ask. In a way, these were questions that La Voz asked our new mayor for an interview in this edition. His answers about how the Lexington Latino community fits into the larger puzzle seemed to hinge on our annual Festival Latino and the looming immigration debate. He seemed to struggle in differentiating between his constituency of 35,000 Latinos and the national immigration debate. He made it clear that with limited funding and perhaps even more limited understanding, his administration would not be knocking on our doors.

We could argue all day about Newberry's responsibility to his residents, regardless of origin, language or immigration status. Some undoubtedly will. But here at La Voz, we've decided to turn the mirror on ourselves and look at how we can make it perfectly clear to City Hall that there are thousands of Latinos in Lexington who are living, working, paying taxes, raising children and contributing their time and culture. We want to show that we too have a vision. We, too, are Lexingtonians.

From this edition on, La Voz will regularly cover city government events and issues. We will report on what you need to know as a Lexingtonian, not just as a Latino or Spanish-speaker. We will make sure you are familiar with your city council representatives. We will make sure that you know as much about what is happening in your city as anyone else living here. That is our charge.

Your charge is to take that information and make it your own. Use it to help you feel like you are part of this city. Get involved. Have an opinion and let those council representatives and Mayor Newberry know what your concerns are.

The mayor says there is ambiguity in what the city government's role should be in regards to immigration, but there should be no doubt about its role toward the people who help make this city great. We are Lexingtonians. This is our city, too. Don't let them forget it.
