I have one of these gadgets myself and my experience has been that the Crosspoint firmware does a very fine job displaying SEbooks epubs and kepubs.

That's good to know! Mine was delivered on Saturday, but I haven't read an SE book on it yet. I'm using CrossInk, so I imagine my experience will be similar.

It looks like he opened Leaves of Grass in the video, and the spacing
wasn't great. Not sure if that's because of his personal line height
settings, or a poor renderer.

He’s using Crosspoint which is a custom firmware for these devices: https://crosspointreader.com/. In the typography section of that page it looks like you should be able to tweak the line-height somewhat, but as it’s running on an ESP32-CW with 400KB ram total I think the rendering options will be somewhat limited.
