"telephone" (verb or noun) always appear as ’phone.  May I remove the elision?
Thanks.

Yes, Alex has approved that for me before. You might make it an editorial commit just in case.

Questions about [Editorial] commit(s):
1. According to the step-by-step guide, we do an [Editorial] commit after step 11, modernize hyphenation and spelling.  That is pretty early in the game.  So, what if we find another editorial change while proofreading?  Do we have to make separate [Editorial] commits for each of them?
2. Ditto for the "mismatched diacritics," step 13.  By definition, we have to choose one or the other mismatch.  Isn't this also an editorial change?

Thank you.

I generally  make a list of all my editorial changes during proof reading and then  make them‚ one by one, as one of the final set of commits.

Where they happen is less important than being able to check them separately.

Well, it really depends on what you are finding while proofreading and your method of proofreading.

Are there a lot of typos? Are you finding just one or two small typos in a section? Are the changes random? Are the changes made from searching and replacing certain words? Do you prefer to group editorial changes by one chapter or by multiple chapters while proofreading? Do you group your changes after proofreading?

Here are my personal methods to editorial changes
  • I usually find a lot of random errors in epic poems. I like to group 5 Cantos at a time to cut down on how often I commit. My commit would look like "[Editorial] Proofread (Cantos 1-5)" This includes small typos, punctuation changes, and capitalization changes. Boring stuff.
  • Occasionally I will find various spellings of or missing diacritics in names or places. I would then do a search and replace, standardizing each word. Each set of changes would be its own commit, "[Editorial] name1 --> name2" I make these changes before, during, or after proofreading.
  • If it's just a single typo, I don't make an editorial commit. My commit is just "Fix typo."

It depends, but generally speaking, if there are a lot of one-offs, then combining then into a single editorial commit can be ok. But I usually change one word at a time in an editorial commit, regardless of how many time it occurs. What you don’t want to do is combine editorial changes and non-editorial changes in a single commit. Adding a missing tag or fixing a transcription error shouldn’t be done in the same commit as editorial changes.

It again depends. It might be a transcription problem instead of a source problem.

The text in the attachment is essentially a flyer/advertisement included in the chapter.
Could you please refer me to an existing SE book that includes something similar--in particular the box inserts?

Thank you.

These will be structured in the xhtml file somewhat similar to letters: surrounded by <blockquote>s and use <header>s for the advertisement titles.

It will need custom CSS to get it to look like the page scans.This website will help with learning all the different properties. For starters, you can target these blockquotes and give it the property "border-style: solid".

Thanks for the help, Emma.

I assume that keeping the text in ALL CAPS is appropriate in this case.  True?

Emma Sweeney

No. You will still correct the letter case and surround the text with <b>. The all caps occurs in the header and footer, and they would look something like:

XHTML
            <header>
                <p>
                    <b>Power and Prosperity in Public Speaking</b>
                </p>
                <p>A Yarn Told at the Club</p>
            </header>
...
            <footer>
                <p>Shortcut Educational Pub. Co.</p>
                <p>
                    <span>Desk WA</span>
                    <span>Sandpit, Iowa.</span>
                </p>
                <p>
                    <b>Are You a 100 Percenter or a 10 Percenter?”</b>
                </p>
            </footer>

Note: when you have both small caps (first <p>) and all caps (last <p>) in the footer you can pick one or the other and surround it with <b> (I picked the all caps). You won't have to create really tricky selecting in CSS.

Now for the CSS. This is where paths diverge from the manual. The CSS for letters isn't going to match the advertisement. The first thing I do when I need to come up with new CSS is seeing if I can borrow anything from the manual. For example, searching for specific elements like header and footer in the single-page manual shows me another way to style headers in SEMOS 7.2.10.8.

header{
    font-variant: small-caps;
    margin: 1em;
    text-align: center;
}

This correctly centers the header contents and creates margins. It also changes the text to small-caps which doesn't match your page scans. You can delete "font-variant: small-caps;" from the header styling.

If you can't borrow anything, you will need to create your own by trying certain properties, pulling up the chapter in a browser, and seeing how it looks. This process can be tedious. Here is some header and footer styling that could help you match the page scans:

CSS
header{
    margin: 1em;
    text-align: center;
}

header > p + p{
    margin-top: .5em;
}

header > p > b,
footer > p > b{
    text-transform: uppercase;
    font-weight: bold;
}

footer{
    margin: 1em;
    text-align: center;
}

footer > p:first-child{
    font-variant: small-caps;
}

footer > p:last-child{
    margin-top: 1em;
}

I use this CSS tutorial all the time! It can explain all of the different ways to select content and can show you the effects of properties before using it in your own work.

I hope this helps

Question:
What should I do with the "image" included in Ch13?
The original image from the scans is attached.  PG replaced it with the description shown in the attachments.
Note also the typo in the original text ('fortht'), which PG corrected.  Should I do the same?  (Too late for an Editorial commit because I have only added semantic info in the beginning of the chapter before landing on this image.)

Thank you.

It’s never too late for an Editorial commit. If you already have changes, then you would commit those and then do a separate Editorial commit. But I don’t think this would be considered an editorial commit; it’s part of the source. Editorial commits are changes to the source, not changes to the transcription.

It’s up to Alex as to whether it’s “essential” or not, but since it’s referred to in the text, it probably needs to be converted to SVG and included. I thought someone had added how to do that to our how-to guides, but it doesn’t appear so. Below are the steps that David Grigg gave me long ago, and that I still follow when I have to do one. Since it’s kind of complicated, you might not want to start on it until Alex says it’s definitely needed.

Steps to convert a jpg/png to svg. These are Mac-centric, but most of the tools are avaliable on Windows/Linux. This can also all be done, I’ve been told, with Inkscape (open source graphics program), but Inkscape on a Mac is not very good; you might be more successful if you’re on Windows and/or Linux. But since I’ve never used, and last I heard David hasn’t been successful with it either, you’re on your own. :)

David Grigg’s steps to convert to SVG:
1) I start with the best, highest resolution image I can get.

2) I open it in an image editor (for me, that's Acorn, but most image editors have similar functions) and apply a grayscale filter, tweaking the settings as needed to get the best looking result. Clean it up manually if necessary to get rid of speckles and fill in obviously broken lines. If you’re going to use potrace in the next step, then you should save the file with a .bmp extension, as potrace requires bmp input.

3) I use a program called Image Vectorizer which is in the Mac app store. It costs a few dollars, but it's well worth it. http://www.image-vectorizer.com . Drop the image in here and click on the Vectorize button, then export the SVG result. If you don’t want to buy it, there’s a free command line tool called potrace (which Image Vectorizer drives behind the scenes). If you decide to use potrace, here’s a sample command line:
potrace -b svg -t 5 -z minority -a 1.00 -O 0.2 -r 300 -k 0.6 --flat -o temp.svg -- infile.bmp

4) You're not done yet! The result tends to be poorly optimised . So I run the SVG image through a tool called SVGO (SVG Optimiser). This is a free command line tool. (https://github.com/svg/svgo). However, as a first stage, I run my SVG through an online version of that tool: SVGOMG (https://jakearchibald.github.io/svgomg/) which makes life a lot simpler. Attached is a screenshot showing the settings I use. Thankfully, SVGOMG retains these between sessions.

5) You’re not done yet! SVGOMG does most of the work, but sometimes still leaves the SVG in a state which has features which we don't want, like transforms. So I use this command-line option (after having installed the SVGO command-line tool:
svgo -i image.svg --enable convertTransform -o image_opt.svg

(The svgo command, at least the one that’s available via brew on the Mac, has undergone changes to how it’s called. The --enable convertTransform is no longer necessary, as it’s a plugin that’s enabled automatically.)
svgo  -i image.svg --enable convertTransform -o image_opt.svg

6) You’re almost there! But not quite. You’ll need to open the SVG in a text editor (I use BBEdit, but any plain-text editor will work). Edit the start of the SVG so it looks something like this:

<svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"; version="1" viewBox="0 0 489 764">
<title>A white rabbit wearing a waistcoat stands upright consulting a pocket-watch.</title>

<path … etc

The key here is to simplify the viewbox parameters to integers, and put in a descriptive title, which should describe the image for blind or partially-sighted readers and end in a period. Save the file back to disk, making sure it retains the .svg extension.

7) You’re done!

Yes, we do want that as an SVG. Inkscape can also trace bitmaps to SVG
and it's free. Create a new document in Inkscape, drag the image into
it, select it then do path -> trace bitmap.

If a newspaper has a Sunday edition, do we italicize Sunday as well as the newspaper name?
i.e.,
Sunday <i epub:type="se:name.publication.newspaper">Advocate-Times</i>,
or
 <i epub:type="se:name.publication.newspaper">Sunday Advocate-Times</i>
Thank you.

In the UK, these are often papers published independently; e.g. The Times and The Sunday Times are owned by the same company but are independent papers. Hard to say what the case is for this one, especially if it might be fictional?

Given that it is capitalized, it is likely  part of the official title, so yes include it in the semantics.

Without weighing in on the answer, isn’t Sunday always capitalized? How would that matter? Or was that not what you meant by “it”?

Genevieve, more context will likely indicate whether the Sunday was an adjective or part of the title.

Well, dates of week are *always* capitalized... As Matt says, it depends
on whether or not "Sunday" is actually part of the name of the paper.
You have to decide that based on context.

This is a fictional, small-town newspaper.  Almost certainly not an independent publication.  Thus, I think it makes more sense to leave Sunday out of the title--i.e., no italics.

Lol. Not so surprisingly I have a bad habit of lower casing things like months and days. I should of checked before opening my big mouth ;-)

Question about punctuation following italics.
Please see the two attachments.  The exclamation mark is italicized in the original, but according to the SE manual of style--as I understand it--it should not be.
Should I follow the scans or the manual?  Note that there are several such cases in the book.
Thank you.

Please explain this error:

S-034: Semantic used from the z3998 vocabulary, but the same semantic exists in the EPUB vocabulary.

<blockquote epub:type="z3998:notice">

The blockquote is used to bracket the indented text in the attachment.

Related question (sort of).

Lint wants a comma separator in the '$4000 (see attachment above).  Should I "correct" the original?
Thanks

Not saying anything about whether that sematic is correct here (I personally don't think it fits):

The error is that we prefer the EPUB vocabulary over the z3998 vocabulary (and the z3998 over the SE vocabulary). Look at https://standardebooks.org/manual/1.6.2/single-page#4.2.1, https://standardebooks.org/manual/1.6.2/single-page#4.2.2, and https://standardebooks.org/manual/1.6.2/single-page#4.2.3

Both the EPUB vocab and the z3998 vocab include "notice" (https://idpf.github.io/epub-vocabs/structure/#notice, https://www.daisy.org/z3998/2012/vocab/structure/#notice) so you should use the EPUB one over the z3998 one (i.e. it should be <blockquote epub:type="notice">).

And yes, you should comma separate the 4000: https://standardebooks.org/manual/1.6.2/single-page#8.8.4

Correct. But Genevieve if you read the semantic description, neither one
fits a blockquote in fiction.

The first header should only surround "Do You Respect Your Loved Ones?" You can remove the second header entirely. You'll need to create CSS that targets "Linden Lane" and uses the same properties as the header.

No, it checks the current version of the files. Lint has no idea what’s committed and what isn’t—in fact it works even if there’s no git repository at all. Is it possible you hadn’t saved the file which still caused it to show up?

Also, note that “ &gt;” counts as one (or both) of the two greater than signs. (This is one where it would be helpful if lint displayed the match.)

else is going on in that novel that we could find a painting on, to give

I like it but we prefer to reserve abstract/cubist art like this for sci

hard. This looks like it would be a good pick for a time travel kind of

Again, this costume is not time period appropriate. It's from 1845,
almost 100 years before the setting of Babbit. What about the painting
Robin suggested? That one is time period appropriate.

Babbitt is a middle-class fool.  The character in Robin's image is way too aristocratic for the personage, in my opinion.  But if someone wants to take over and complete my project, that is fine with me.  The chapters are done (but not proof-read).  Colophon and content need to be completed.

Don’t give up! I had the same issue with a bunch of Wodehouse’s stuff…it is hard to find painting s from the 20s. Do try finding a painting you like and then searching archive.org so see if you can find a printing of it. Sometimes you luck out.

We really should have a warning on the newer books that images are a lot harder to find :-)

I noticed that the "National Portrait Gallery" section of the Smithsonian has several CC0 portraits in it that are relatively modern. I don't know if any of these fit what you're after, but maybe it'll help.

The 2nd one would work well. The other two are famous personalities so
maybe not a great match for any cover. (Booth Tarkington would probably
be pretty upset at being the image of a caricature of modernity!)

Error C-015: Element after or containing z3998:salutation does not have text-indent: 0;.

Can you please explain what is wrong (see attachment)?

I believe you're missing this CSS for 7.7.2.5:

[epub|type~="z3998:salutation"] + p,
[epub|type~="z3998:letter"] header + p{
        text-indent: 0;
}

(The deleted message had a misleading suggestion about putting the salutation in a header. I had forgot about 7.7.2.2 when I sent it.)

There is a speech starting with a double quotation mark and a single quotation mark, running through several paragraphs.  Both types of quotation marks close at the end of the last paragraph.  However, I get a t-003 error if there is another set of quotation marks (double) in the course of the speech.  In other words:
" ' first par bla bla bla
" ' second par "an inner quote"
" ' third par
" ' last paragraph ' "
In the above example,  lint shows an error for the second paragraph.
I attach an example.  I don't know what I get this error--and how to fix it.

Thank you.

In your screen shot it looks like the paragraph starts with a left double quote followed by a right single quote. The right single quote should be a left single quote.

Correct, and it happens twice in the screenshot

If you can't tell what a character is, copy it and use `se
unicode-names` to print out its full name. This tool is specifically for
that purpose and to tell confusables apart like thin spaces, en/em
dashes, etc.

“I can’t really tell”. Yes, it can be difficult. If you have an editor which lets you change the font, you might be interested in this discussion which includes a link to a customised font I developed which makes the shape of quotes much more obvious, and has special glyphs for dashes:

I don't know how to start a new paragraph within this footer (see attachments).
If I use a <p> tag, I get a c-011 error "Element with text-align: center; but text-indent is 1em."
If I use a <br/> tag, I get a s-014 error "<br/> after block-level element. "

There is probably something to add or change in css, which drives me crazy.

Thank you!

Genevieve: I’m not sure why you are styling the footer with text-align center. If you cut and paste the CSS for letters from the manual you’ll be in pretty good shape. Because there are several paragraphs within the postscript, though, you should group them within a <div epub:type="Z3998:postscript"> … </div>.

The footer is centered in the advertisement in chapter 6. Since you now have footers that require different stylings, you'll need to adjust your advertisement CSS to only affect that chapter. You can do that by adding "#chapter-6" to the selectors.

I need help with this x-003 error concerning the illustration.
 Illegal transform attribute. SVGs should be optimized to remove use of transform. Try using Inkscape to save as an “optimized SVG”.

transform="matrix(.09524 0 0 -.09524 -26 243.937)"

I followed David's method (see October 19 posting) and bought the Vectorizer app ( http://www.image-vectorizer.com ) since Inkscape does not work with the Mac.  I probably did something wrong.

ima_ch13.png (attached) is the illustration as it appears in the scanned document.  The other png file is the cleanest rendition of this drawing I could get before conversion to svg.

Thank you.

It doesn’t. It’s available for a Mac, but the user experience is bad to awful for even the simplest things. They’ve made an effort the last couple of years, but they don’t have any experienced Mac developers, and they have a ton of long-standing issues on the platform.

Thank you very much, Emma!  Using your file, I no longer get the x-003 error.  However, I get an x-001 error

The only text in the entire file is the title:

Any other idea?

x-001 is referring to encoding="UTF-8". You need to convert it to encoding="utf-8".

I can't recreate the other errors with your repository. The link does work, but there may be some other problem in your local files. You'll have to push your most recent changes to your repository for me to see what you're seeing.

Check if you have the latest toolset version. You can do that by running pipx upgrade standardebooks. Another thing to check for is that the link is also pasted in the imprint.

Just make sure you're running the current version of the toolkit and have a look in /Users/[Your name]/tools/se/data/templates if you're on a Mac or the equivalent on Windows. Or do a dummy se create-draft -a="author name" -t="book title" and copy those files from there.

For t-037, the single quotes around ’Georgie, old bean, I like Lucile first-rate, but you and me, George, we got to make her get over this highty-tighty hooptediddle way she’s got.‘ are in the wrong direction.

For m-007 and m-037, I only see these errors in your imprint. Make sure you have the same link across your content.opf, colophon, and imprint.

I am down to two errors (see attachment). :-)
m-28:  I don't have the slightest idea of what this is about.
m-042:  I need information on the "expected structure."  I compared my manifest with the one in Dr. Jekyll, and the only difference I see (besides the number of chapters) is the additional illustration-1.svg file.  Should it appear before or after titlepage.svg?

Thank you, David.  Once I rebuilt the manifest, both errors went away.
On to proofreading . . .

Questions about letter formatting (please see attachment)
1. Are the sender's address and the recipient's address part of the header, above the salutation, or in separate block quotes?
2. Does the formatting for these addresses (left justified for the recipient, right justified for the sender) need to be in css or can I specify it in the text since this is a "single-use" case?

I could not find the answer to these questions in the style manual, but if is there, please give me the reference.
Thank you.
