I think the italics got dropped in the transcription, and the transcriptions from this site tend to have a lot of typos, but otherwise this should be straightforward.

The text has a reference to "the Crisis, a magazine of the darker races," with "a magazine of the darker races" in italics. This seems to be a reference to the original subtitle of The Crisis ("A Record of the Darker Races") but doesn't exactly match. Do we want to leave this italicized? Should we titlecase it? I'm leaning no to both questions.

I think you're right. Remove italics from "a magazine of the darker races".

I noticed that sometimes numbered streets are spelled out ("One Hundred and Thirty-Fifth Street") and sometimes in numeric form ("139th Street"). Should I standardize to the numeric form? That seems more typical for streets in NYC today.

CMoS 9.51: "Numbered streets. Names of numbered streets, avenues, and so forth are usually spelled out if one hundred or less."
Ex. Ninety-Fifth Street, 122nd Street.
`One Hundred and Thirty-Fifth Street` should be changed to `139th Street`.

`One Hundred and Thirty-Fifth Street` should be changed to `135th Street`.
