[Proposed production] Certain Noble Plays of Japan

While poking around in Gutenberg I happened on https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/8094 which is a collection of four Noh plays. I’d like to produce it for SE, but I’m a little bit confused about how we might structure the authorship metadata.

The plays are listed as “chosen and finished by Ezra Pound” so I imagine we can put him down as compiler [com] and maybe editor [edt].

The book lists the source as being “from the manuscripts of Ernest Fenollosa” so I’d assume given his background that he’s translated them in the first place.

Then for the four plays themselves, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Noh_plays has the authors as:

• Nishikigi: Zeami
• Hagoromo:  Zeami
• Kumasaka: Zenchiku
• Kagekiyo: Zeami

There‘s also an introduction by Yeats.

Any thoughts on how to proceed? Is this something that SE would want?

I think these would go in a "short plays" omnibus at least for Zeami,
and also for Zenchiku if he did nohs, which I assume he did.

I don't know what "finished" means here. What exactly did Pound do here?
Are there more Fernollosa translations out there?

I think we need to do more detailed research on exactly what the
situation is here before we do anything. But working on this as a single
"Certain Noble Plays" ebook is probably not the direction we want to go in.

After a bit more searching I found https://archive.org/details/nohoraccomplishm00feno that has a few more plays in a collaboration between Fernollosa and Pound. In it Ezra Pound describes himself as ”someone who has but the pleasure of arranging beauty into the words”. So a small collection of Zeami Motokiyo plays, as translated by Fenollosa and Pound? From those two books we get:

• Nishikigi
• Hagoromo
• Kagekiyo
• Kakitsubata

I’m not finding anything else for “Zeami” or “Motokiyo” (his given name) or “Kanze” (another surname reading).

All in that comes to ~8K words, so that would be a very short SE production. Maybe it’s better to leave this.

We could do a Zeami short plays collection. It looks like at least 12
are attributed to him. The only question would be, do we use the
various_translators slug in anticipation of any more being added in the
future? I would guess yes?

After a bit of digging I found this Arthur Waley book from 1921 (seems to be on PG at http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/43304 but it’s down at the moment so I can’t double-check) that using the name Seami adds:

• Atsumori (referenced in the “universal attribution” list on Wikipedia)
• Tsunemasa
• Kagekiyo (also in Fernollosa / Pound)
• Hachi no Ki
• Kantan (“This play is usually attributed to Seami”)
• Aya no Tsuzumi (“Attributed to Seami, but perhaps earlier”)
• Hagoromo (also in Fernollosa / Pound)
• Tōru (attributed to Kwanami or Seami)
• Ikeniye (part 1 by Seami, missing part 2)
• Haku Rakuten

That makes 12 plays in total which feels like a worthy compilation? Or 9 if we drop the unclear attributions.

Well, all the translated ones. The Waley book has some summaries of some more, but apparently a lot of his writing was only rediscovered in an antique booksellers in Tokyo in 1908. But OK, I’ll start putting this together.

OK, I ended up finding a bunch more info after finding the incredibly useful https://noh.jparc.online/plays/list-of-n%C5%8D-translations. Off the back of that, I’ve put together a spreadsheet at https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1P4IxQJg4op4vtIwylRCbUmGM99smgAMpvtzE_ZRK9Jk.

The remaining questions before I get started (mostly coming from the fact that we’re talking about 600 years of change):

• Do we want to include plays where the attribution is currently uncertain, but at some point it’s been suggested that it’s Zeami behind them?
• Do we want to include plays where it was originally written by someone else and revised by Zeami?
• Do we want to include plays that were abridged by the translators?

My feeling is probably yes to all of the above, and then note that in the longdesc / foreword. I would also suggest publishing under the ja-Latn name, and add an endnote for common english names, as that seems to be the standardised way to refer to them.

We don't want plays that he merely revised, or heavily abridged plays.

Re. attribution, I think it's a case by case basis. If there is general
scholarly consensus that he probably wrote a play, then we can include
it. If there's a lot of dispute then no. However these would all be
worth including in the spreadsheet with notes on why we did or didn't
include them, so we know in the future.

As far as I understand, a good half of the Noh canon has been attributed to Zeami at some point or another. It’s not so much that there’s dispute on a bunch of these: more that after 600 years it’s just lost as to who originally wrote them. But let’s do it like this:

1. Tōru, Atsumori, Takasago, Kinuta, Sakuragawa, Nishikigi, Suma genji and Yamanba have widely understood attribution to Zeami and if abridged seem not to be abridged by any substantial amount.
2. Tsunemasa, Hagoromo, Kagekiyo, Hachi no ki, Kantan, Aya no tsuzumi, Ikenie and Hakurakuten are attributed to Zeami by the 1900–20s authors, but JPARC-noh have them listed as currently understood to be an “Unknown” author.

We obviously definitely want 1. I’m guessing your opinion on 2 is to not include them (that’s probably my feeling too)?

Going to go with van Gogh’s Irises as cover art. Oil paintings of noh is non-existent, but Zeami possibly penned an iris-themed play so close enough. This was van Gogh’s ukiyo-e phase anyway, so there’s a Japanese connection.

I’ve added it to the DB (CC0 from Getty) but as we don’t have an entry for this compilation yet I can’t assign it.

Quick update: transcriptions are done. Tōru turned out to just be a summary, so we ended up with 7 plays in total. Total word count will be 15.3K, so not the longest but a worthy addition.

I also looked for what’s coming up in the next decade and there are two more that will be able to be added: Aridōshi in 2028 and Tadanori in 2030. Source scans have been added to the spreadsheet.

Question on drama structure. Obviously we’ve got a bunch of different translators here with different processes. So we’ve got some different approaches to structure:

• Atsumori has an introduction, dramatis personae, unheaded acts, and a non-fiction interlude explanation
• Kinuta has a dramatis personae, unheaded plot introduction, and single act
• Nishikigi has a dramatis personae and two headed acts
• Sakuragawa has an introduction, dramatis personae, and two headed acts
• Suma Genji has a dramatis personae and two headed acts
• Takasago has a dramatis personae, unheaded plot introduction, a headed prologue and two headed acts
• Yamanba has a dramatis personae, two unheaded acts, and a listed intermission

My suggested (obviously editorial) approach here would be:

• Move introductions in Kinuta and Takasago to above the dramatis personae and give them headings
• Add act headings to Atsumori and move the explanation of the contents of the interlude to the introduction.
• Add act headings to Yamanba and remove the “<p>(The intermission.)</p>”

Does this sound reasonable, or do we think it’s going too far?

OK Weijia, I think we’re ready for review: https://github.com/robinwhittleton/zeami-motokiyo_plays_various-translators. Production notes:

• Atsumori and Nishikigi were the only two Gutenberg plays, the rest were transcribed from source.
• I didn’t bother transcribing the Takasago introduction because it was seven pages long.
• So the whole thing ended up at 15.4K words.
• There are probably more Editorial commits than I’d usually have. The main one is the restructuring as spoken about earlier in this thread, but please have a look through the rest.
• I added a foreword as we’ve sometimes done in the past for collections with lots of translators.
