I'd like to take this on next:

Things that appeal after Varieties of Religious Experience are:
 - no end notes
 - no block quotes

The original includes quite a few illustrations. Should I include those in the ebook?

OK, sure. Don't include the illustrations, we cut all decorative
illustrations as a matter of general policy. Please send a link to your
repo once you start.

Ok, noted.

I've been a bit stuck finding a cover image. Would this be appropriate? It's not directly related to Barnaby Rudge but the overall theme seems right and it's public domain.

This is how the cover comes out. By cropping most of the sky I was able to get the people clear of the title box.

Unfortunately, that painting is already in use for The Playboy of the Western World.

It looks like Dolly Varden by William Powell Frith appears on some editions Barnaby Rudge (PD proof).

Dolly Varden would be ideal, but I don't have access to that PD proof link. If the proof check out I'm happy to go with that.

I went ahead and uploaded the Frith, "Dolly Varden" painting to the Artworks db. I used the best-quality, highest res image I could find, but if there's a better one, perhaps this one can be replaced?

Hope that helps!

Great, thank you. There's a higher resolution image here:  William_Powell_Frith_Dolly_Varden_1843.jpg (2646×3300). It looks like this is a slightly different version of the painting though, so I'm not sure if this one has an acceptable PD proof.

No, that is a totally different painting. Not useful for PD proof.

A higher resolution scan of the PD painting is here: https://framemark.vam.ac.uk/collections/2018LF0428/full/full/0/default.jpg

That's on the V&A Museum image server. The link is publicly accessible (I found it using Claude.ai) though if I was to download it via V&A website I'd need to accept their T&Cs. Is this an obstacle to using the high res image?

Also, in line with the SEMoS instruction "The arrangement of the text is a suggestion, and may be changed by the producer in case a more visually-pleasing arrangment is desired." I've moved the title box to the top of the cover image. I think this gives a much better result as otherwise the box covers up the character's legs and feet. Is this acceptable?

My understanding is (please correct my if I'm wrong, Alex) is that if we can prove that the painting is PD, it doesn't matter where we source the scans from. But the image that David uploaded looks totally fine to me and there's no any particular need to use this bigger version.

The title box always goes on the bottom. The instruction that you are looking at is talking about the text within the box, not the positon of the box itself.

If the title box needs to go on the bottom it will look something like this. Personally I prefer the first one though I'm happy to stick to the standard if needed.

Yes, please stick to the standard. This version still looks very good.
