I authored an annotated edition of the Brigadier Gerard stories (https://www.wessexpress.com/products/the-annotated-brigadier-gerard), available in print from Wessex Press, and in the course of that project had to prepare versions of the stories which conformed to facsimile pages from their first publication in The Strand magazine (the version Conan Doyle considered and Conan Doyle scholars consider authoritative). Essentially, these are corrected versions of what might be available from Project Gutenberg and elsewhere. I understand that these would need to be revised further using the SE style guide, but they'll certainly be a big head start to get the entire Brigadier Gerard series (apart from his incidental appearance in Conan Doyle's Uncle Bernac) into SE. Is anyone else working on these stories? I'd be happy to coordinate. If no one's working on this project, could you offer some suggestions as to how to begin (other than installing the tools)? It'd be big for a first project I know, but without the need to further proof the underlying text perhaps it'd be manageable? Thanks.

Great Colin, since you've basically done it already you could do this as
a first project.

The first step is compiling a research spreadsheet for our records, so
that we understand what this omnibus will look like:
https://standardebooks.org/contribute/spreadsheets#creating-a-new-spreadsheet

Please follow the instructions there to create a spreadsheet for the
omnibus "Brigadier Gerard Stories". You can see other spreadsheets on
that page to get an idea of what a complete sheet looks like.

Once you have that done, let us know and I'll take a look. Then you can
start work on the ebook itself.

There's already a spreadsheet with these stories.

Well, excellent, thanks Hendrik!

So first step is to review that spreadhsheet and confirm that you think
it's accurate for this omnibus. Looks like the relevant stories are at
the top.

Excellent. Thanks for the pointer, Henrik. It looks like the "First published in" should refer to a story's first publication in Britain, where all appeared in The Strand. One of the stories appeared first in a US publication, but the British version is considered the authoritative one. "Also published in" would be just the major collection? Nearly all of the stories were published in several newspapers and magazines and several were collected in multiple collections of Conan Doyle's short fiction during his lifetime. In addition to the short stories, Gerard appeared as a minor character in the novel Uncle Bernac, which I didn't see on the list. That would not generally be considered part of the Brigadier Gerard stories, despite his incidental role. I'll complete the spreadsheet as best I can and we can determine how to go from there. Thanks.

OK great. I've added you as an editor.

These spreadsheets are to facilitate PD clearance and organize
omnibuses, they're not meant to be totally complete listings of every
possible detail of a story. So we're concerned with the earliest
publication year to determine public domain status, and other
publications to determine if an omnibus is necessary (in this case, we
already know it is).

So just review the spreadsheet to make sure it looks good to you for
these stories, tweak anything that looks out of order, and let me know
when you're wrapped up.
