Hello!

I am interested in learning more about eBook typesetting. For my first project, I am eyeing this book from the wanted list: Outdoor Pastimes of an American Hunter by Theodore Roosevelt.

Page Scans: https://archive.org/details/outdoor-pastimes-of-an-american-hunter-1905/ (there are a few versions, but this one looks pretty clean)

I'm familiar with git and web development, but have never worked on eBooks specifically. I'm excited to learn more!

Thanks,
Charlie

Great, that one would be a good start.

The tough part of this book will be the many illustrations, but I don't
think any of them need to be SVGs so it won't be too bad. I also see at
least one letter. Because there is frontmatter including a frontispiece,
you'll have to add a half title page.

Make sure to read the Standard Ebooks Manual of Style before starting,
as you won't know what to fix if you haven't read the standards. In
particular, please closely review the semantics, high level patterns,
and typography sections:

https://standardebooks.org/manual

https://standardebooks.org/manual/latest/4-semantics

https://standardebooks.org/manual/latest/7-high-level-structural-patterns

https://standardebooks.org/manual/latest/8-typography

The step by step guide will take you from start to finish:

https://standardebooks.org/contribute/producing-an-ebook-step-by-step

This page on common issues in older books may be useful:

https://standardebooks.org/contribute/how-tos/common-issues-when-working-on-public-domain-ebooks

Please email often if you have any questions at all. Our standards are
well-established so there is probably already a standard for formatting
whatever problem you've encountered.

When you're ready, email back with a link to your Github repository so
that I can mark you as having started.

Have fun! :)

Can do!

Just the initial commit so far--I'll push updates as I work through the step-by-step guide.

Also, in cleaning up the front/endmatter, I noticed that the scanned version I was referencing didn't align with the PG content (it was missing some chapters). Here's the full scan I'll be referencing as I proceed: https://archive.org/details/outdoorpastimeso00roos/page/n21/mode/2up

Thank you!

OK, Lukas will manage this with Emma reviewing

Great! I'm working through this still, slowly but surely. I've got some questions about how to format the intro letter, but I'll reach out with specific questions once I've made it through the rest of the tutorial. Thanks for your patience!

OK... I think I have the figure/photograph formatting down, but can I get a check on this before I go through and update all the rest of the figure tags across the other chapters? There are a total of 55 in this book, so I'd like to make sure I have it right.

https://github.com/sinclarius/theodore-roosevelt_outdoor-pastimes-of-an-american-hunter/blob/main/src/epub/text/chapter-1.xhtml

There are 8 photographs in all in chapter 1. Most appear to be full-page portrait layout, but there is one rotated landscape photo (illustration 4). https://archive.org/details/outdoorpastimeso00roos/page/16/mode/2up?view=theater

Should that be displayed differently?

Thanks!

That looks good. Don't forget to add the appropriate CSS.

You should display all the photos right side up, regardless of how they appear in the scans.

Great, thank you! Is it preferred to keep all of the image/style changes in one commit or to break them out by chapter (as I have done with chapter 1)?

Whatever works best for you is fine. Personally I would try and put them in a single commit, but that's not required.

Sorry, forgot to add: the important thing to remember is that each commit should be a single kind of change. So if you want to do all the images for chapter-1, then all the images for chapter-2 etc, that's fine, but don't mix adding images with any other kind of change.
