Hi,

for my next project I'd like to take Jorrocks’ Jaunts and Jollities by R. S. Surtees, from the wanted list.

I have found several scans in the Internet archive:
  1. Edition of 1843 – with illustrations by H. Alken, Phiz and W. Heath
  2. Edition of 1874 – with 16 illustrations by H. Alken, different from 1.
  3. Edition of 1903 – with 15 illustrations by H. Alken (same as in 2. but one is omitted). Without last chapter "The Day After the Feast".
  4. 1920 reprint of 1911 edition – same illustrations by H. Alken as in 3., also missing last chapter "The Day After the Feast".
PG transcription includes last chapter, so I am leaning towards 2.

I suppose illustrations should be dropped?

For the cover I'd like to use the first illustration from 3. and 4. editions if I'll be able to find a sufficiently good quality image. Will make a mockup if you think image is fine.

Couple questions about the book already:
  1. I've noticed that in PG transcription at least one chapter title is in the wrong place according to any scan – chapter X in PG vs chapter 10 in 1874 edition – is this [Editorial] or not?
  2. Chapter X contains a table which is completely in French: https://archive.org/details/jorrocksjauntsjo00surt/page/218/mode/1up. In PG transcription it is reproduced as an image: https://www.gutenberg.org/cache/epub/15387/pg15387-images.html#X. Should it be a table or an illustration (a table byut?
  3. There are footnotes by the Editor, e.g. footnote 24. Should they be kept by the Editor or should they be changed to be by someone else? Editor in our case is a different person than in the scans.
Let me know if I can start on this.

OK, sure. Please send a link to your repo so we can assign managers.

I don't think that cover art will work because it's not a fine art oil
painting style. However it shouldn't be hard to find fox
hunt/steeplechase/equestrian paintings.

Thank you!

Regarding cover – wasn't able to find that anyway :) Instead I have three options by the same artist:

OK, Vince will manage this with David reviewing.

Also note the author should be `R. S. Surtees`

  1. Changes to match scans are not editorial. Editorial is marking instances where we’re changing the text from the scans.
  2. It should be a table.
  3. No one in the SE process is acting as editors, so the editor isn’t changing. They can stay as is. Since we don’t know the editor’s name (I assume; I didn’t see it mentioned in the scans I looked at), then I believe we use the publisher’s name for the metadata.
