A quick short fiction compilation before Onegin. Github: https://github.com/robinwhittleton/herman-melville_short-fiction

  • State of the transcriptions pretty good: a single erratum in The Apple-Tree Table and 5 in The Piazza Tales.
  • Publication order as per https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herman_Melville_bibliography#Short_stories  “Daniel Orme” and “The Two Temples” were collected in “Billy Budd, and Other Stories” in 1924, but scans and transcriptions currently don’t seem to exist so haven’t been included here.
  • Unfortunately I couldn’t find any portraits of Melville with PD proof, but one of the short stories (“Cock-a-Doodle-Doo!”) is about a magnificent rooster so I went with “A Rooster with Hens and Chicks” by Albertus Verhoesen. CC0 from Rijksmuseum: http://hdl.handle.net/10934/RM0001.COLLECT.6412 . The sky was water damaged (see source) but I’ve somewhat mitigated that in the prepared cover.
  • Nothing particularly complex in the production, although there’s one SVG to describe what an island looks like (hand-prepared from a scan). Apart from that, the usual scattering of books, magazines, ships, poems and an epigram.
  • Pretty horrendous outright racism in “Benito Cereno”, to the point where I added a mini-warning to the long description in the same style as Fu-Manchu. If it was a few references I’d write it off as old-school, but the entire story is basically a screed against “the negro”, wrapped in a pirate yarn.

Looks good! I've gone ahead and released it.

For future reference, we're no longer using the "volume" semantic on
short stories/novellas. I don't think I actually announced this. Its
inclusion was based on a strict interpretation of the epub vocabulary
but I think it was the wrong interpretation. Anyway, I've removed them
in this one.

Gutenberg recently added Billy Budd and other prose pieces which has the remaining work we were missing. After Zeami is completed I’ll add these to the collection in a PR.
