For my next project, I would like to work on a John Donne poetry collection. A spread sheet has already been started, but I'm not quite sure on the order of the poems. 85% of the poems were published in 1633, after the author's death. The rest were squeezed into numbered sections (see holy sonnets and elegies), so reordering the poems by publication date would break up the ordered poems. The section order varies between various editions.

I would like to use E. K. Chambers' edition, since he uses modern spelling. Should I just go with how he orders the sections?

For the cover, there are religious painting in the art DB that work well:

1. Christ in the Realm of the Dead by Joakim Skovgaard

2. Christ in the Wilderness by Ivan Kramskoy

OK, sure. Ordering them according to the Chambers edition is fine.
Please send a link to your repo once you start.

Just a quick update: I'm 90% through creating a rough transcription. After rereading the poems, I think Christ in the Realm of the Dead by Joakim Skovgaard is a better fit for the cover. I've gone ahead and reserved it for this production.

I'm still working on this! I've been double checking the authorship for some of the poems. I've noted in the spreadsheet which ones were attributed to Donne at some point but were later discovered to be written by others.

The raw OCR needs a lot of work. The transcription won't be completed for several more months...

Sounds good. Did you ever decide on a painting?

I went back to look at some newer editions to see if there were any more poems that needed to be added. After looking at all these different editions of John Donne's poetry, I have found that no one can agree exactly which poems are written by John Donne! The Norton Critical Edition doesn't include many of the elegies, satires, or verse letters; The Variorum Edition compares different manuscripts and their many different spellings, word choices, and orders. Other editions either include all of the poems regardless of their questionable origins, or they copy Herbert Grierson's edition verbatim. This problem stems from the fact that Donne's poems were published posthumously.

What editors can agree on is that Herbert Grierson was the best scholar on John Donne's works. I propose that we order the poems like in Herbert Grierson's The Poems of John Donne. I can't use the actual text from Grierson's book, because it uses Early Modern English. I will continue to use the text from E. K. Chamber's edition since it uses Modern English (and is the only collection in the public domain that modernizes the language), which I'm still cleaning up. There are only a couple or poems that are present in Grierson's edition but absent from Chamber's edition; I'll see if I can find some other editions that have Modern English versions of these poems.

I have marked the poems that Grierson found to have uncertain authorship in the spreadsheet.
