Hi,

There's a portrait at the start of the book (both in PG and the scans) of presumably Sherman. I don't think it's ever directly mentioned in the book. Is that something I should include in the production? Thanks!

Also one more question. How should I handle all the maps? They seem to just be ripped from the scans and some have visible crease marks in the paper.

Should I convert them to SVGs?

- Art looks good! I've updated the art DB.

- Don't include the portrait.

- Convert the maps to SVGs. Make sure to use the enlarged images. If you use Inkscape, you'll have to adjust the threshold when you run "trace bitmap".

The frontispiece looks like an engraving of a painting or photograph. If
you can find the original, it might be worth it to include.

You should try to remove creases, splotches, etc. when converting the
maps to SVG. Ideally the SVGs will be very clean.

Going through the images and there's this photograph: https://www.gutenberg.org/cache/epub/4361/images/Commanders.jpg.

I've found the original photo (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Major_General_William_T._Sherman,_Commanding_Military_Division_of_the_Mississippi,_and_his_Generals,_1._Maj._Gen._O...._-_NARA_-_533374.jpg) however it has numbers written it on not present in the Gutenberg version. All other versions of the photo I found elsewhere were completely missing a general.

Should I just crop the PG version or replace it with the higher quality one with numbers? Thank you!

Hi again. I'm back with another question.

I've been going through the maps, trying to convert them to SVG, but the PG images seem to be too poor quality for the smaller labels to render properly. I've tried looking for better scans but so far the scans I've looked at either didn't unfold the maps or were of the first edition which didn't include them at all (engraving was too expensive apparently).

Do know of any way to get the text to turn out better?

- You can use the PG version of the generals. I would crop the text out and transcribe the text in a <figcaption>.

- Try to find the original photos. If you can't, just use the engravings.

- It looks like the threshold is too high. There are a couple things you could do to prep the image before tracing: 1) Convert the image to black and white. This can help darken up the small text. 2) Enlarge the image using an upscaler. The bigger the image, the easier it is to trace.

There's an appendix labelled as "Appendix to Volume 1," should I keep it at the end of the first volume or move it to the end with the rest of the backmatter? If it should stay with Volume 1, would it still get the backmatter semantic inflection? Thank you!

Hi again,

I've been formatting a lot of letters and in one of them in chapter 10, it mentions a table with all the casualty statistics organized by company (https://www.gutenberg.org/cache/epub/4361/pg4361-images.html#ch10). Below it is a table that only lists some general statistics from the end of the table and has a header that says it is a summary (might've been added by the transcription team?) of the table. The summary table does not include any information about the companies.

The scans however, (https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=uc1.$b68252&seq=285) have a much larger table with more detailed entries. Should I add the entries from the scans or just leave the summary as is?
