I would like to take a break from Canterbury Tales and work on Metamorphoses. The best translation is a collaborative translation by John Dryden, Joseph Addison, Laurence Eusden, Arthur Maynwaring, Samuel Croxall, Nahum Tate, William Stonestreet, Thomas Vernon, John Gay, Alexander Pope, Stephen Harvey, William Congreve, John Ozell, Temple Stanyan, Alexander Stopford Catcott, Nicholas Rowe, Samuel Garth, and Leonard Welsted.

That's a lot of translators. Did they each do their own section or
something? Is there no complete translation by one person?

I believe 10 of the 18 translators do translate at least a whole story. The sections are all labeled.

The wikipedia page lists two other translations in verse. The translation by Brookes More is good, but I've only found page scans for the first book. There are 15 books in total; this might mean that the rest of his translation is not yet in the public domain. The other translation by George Sandys is not as good as the collaborative translation. Other translations I found are in prose.

great. So maybe it's for the best that his translation was lost.

Ok, I'm almost done with this production, but I ran into a little snag when I first built the repository. I could only list 10 of the 18 translators. If I tried to use more I would get an error about the repository name being too long. I've manually added the rest of the translators to the content.opf, colophon, titlepage.xhtml. What would be the best way to edit the titlepage.svg?

The repository name being too long only applies to the Github repo name,
because Github sets a hard limit on repo name length. However that does
not apply anywhere else. So, for the Github repo just trim it to size,
but everywhere else it can be the full length.

Wow, I don't know if I've ever actually seen that error out in the

wild without it being part of an exploit.

Most OS have filesystems that have an upper limit of 256 characters in

a filename by default. There are workarounds, but it's probably easier

on everyone to just truncate the list of translators (maybe with an

"_et-al" at the end).

_et-all is a good solution, I like that. Trim it to the last translator
that entirely fits in 200 characters, and add _et-all to the end of the
repo name. Let's go with that.

I thought we were going to trim the slug and end it with _et-al? We
should do that for the internal slug as well, because the filename size
limit can hit us on other systems too.

Thanks for the review, Bruce! I've fixed the issues, except for modernizing the spelling. The page scan link in the colophon is correct and formatted like in SEMOS 6.4.4.3.1.

My argument for not modernizing sate -> sat or gripe -> grip is because these words do not sound alike in this poem. For example, "On lofty thrones twice six celestials sate, /Jove in the midst, and held their warm debate;" vs "The time between, before the fire they sat, / And shorten’d the delay by pleasing chat."

Sorry for the delay.

For the 'et al' truncation, that really only applies to the repo name
because it's too long for some filesystems. So, in the text body, we
don't want to shorten it to 'et al', we want to credit every translator.

So, we need to update the following to include all the translators:

- Colophon

- titlepage.svg, in <title> and also in the image

- cover.svg, in <title>

- URL in imprint.xhtml

Remember to run se build-images after updating the SVGs.

Also, I've only ever seen this written as THE Metamorphoses, and all of
the page scans I'm glancing through agree on their title pages.
Shouldn't that be the ebook title?

I can easily change the colophon, imprint, titlepage.xhtml, and <title> elements for titlepage.svg and cover.svg.

The titles Metamorphoses (Penguin and Oxford editions) vs The Metamorphoses (Everyman's Library Classics and Barnes & Noble Classics Series) are equally used, followed by Ovid's Metamorphoses. FWIW, the Library of Congress has it filed under Metamorphoses. If you still want the title THE Metamorphoses, this can also be easily changed.

The only trouble that I'm having with changing is the titlepage.svg image. What would be the best way to edit this?

OK, let's leave out THE for now. Let me know when the translator stuff
is wrapped up. You can use se create-draft to regenerate a new titlepage
with the correct translators. If they run over the bottom of the image
then change the font size in the SVG's internal CSS.

OK, I've expanded the list of translators in the files mentioned and fixed the link in the imprint. Unfortunately in the titlepage.svg, the list of translators is so long that no amount of font-size changing made it possible to show the whole list. This will need more manual adjustments to make it work.
