Over the years we've done a lot of great research to determine what
works to include in our omnibuses. This is done on spreadsheets which we
compile in https://standardebooks.test/contribute/spreadsheets

However, each producer has their own style of spreadsheet, and this
makes it more difficult to *quickly* review to see what's being
proposed, what we already have collected, and what remains to be included.

With that in mind I've created a new spreadsheet template, which I'd
like for everyone to use when starting new spreadsheets in the future:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1CE2AsQ7E5WS9NORubHuiVAmWHYDrmU3bXWUghmnU4kU

It includes some basic columns that are common to all omnibus research,
and producers can add their own special columns at the end.

It also has some prebuilt formatting like greying out items that are not
PD yet, and checkboxes to indicate that an item already exists in one of
our omnibuses.

More detailed instructions are here:
https://standardebooks.org/contribute/spreadsheets

I'm happy to entertain suggestions for more default columns, or other
tweaks, if anyone has suggestions. However I want to keep the basic
template both simple and universal - remember you can always add custom
columns at the end.

Now that we have a template, it would be extremely useful - and
extremely tedious - to convert our existing spreadsheets to use our
template. Would anyone be interested in doing working on that?

For my latest spreadsheets I've been putting the titles as Something, The instead of The Something, since I think this makes it easier for ordering, do you think I should keep doing this way or follow your template and put the article in front?

I'll start to convert my spreadsheets for the new format.

Let's exclude title sorting for now. I think it's more common to sort by
publication year and work type than title in these cases.

To convert your existing spreadsheets, please:

1. Make a copy of the template into your account using File -> Make a copy

2. Remove the example items

3. Put your information into the copy as closely aligned with the
template as possible. Exclude custom columns unless absolutely, truly
necessary.

Let's do one to start with to see how the new template works. Once
you've finished, let me know and we'll take a look. Thanks!

I think either Year Published should be Date Published, or there should be a Date Published column. What’s typically being categorized in these have multiple works per year, and in order to get them in chronological order for the omnibus, we have to sort on the full publication date, when available. In all the ones I’ve worked on at least, that full publication date is usually available. IOW, I think this common enough it shouldn't be pushed to “Custom column”.

I would also suggest Name, date, and book order columns (of whatever name) for the (main) book the work appears in. Since the books are where most of the transcriptions are coming from, it’s important to have all of that information while working on it, so we can find the story we’re reading in the (almost always multiple) scans. This is again a common thing; I’ve had and needed it on every one of these I’ve done. It can be shunted to custom columns, but that means all of these I’ve done would have custom columns. :)
("Also published in” to me is for when a story is published in more than one paper/magazine, which is common, or for more than one book, which is less so.)

OK, I changed it to date published.

I think book order, etc., should go in custom columns. For the general
purpose case, which is organizing a list of items to decide where to put
them, that info isn't necessary. However it can certainly useful for
tasks beyond organizing, like putting the actual ebook together.

Another question, when should I add something to "Also published in"? I ask because some authors (like Lovecraft) had their stories compiled in several publications, and adding them doesn't seem very useful.

I started migrating my spreadsheet of Fyodor Dostoesvsky, please take a look and tell me if I'm doing something obviously wrong.

Hold off for a little while longer, I want to make some minor tweaks.

Also published in is useful to determine if there are items that were
published in multiple collections, which would help decide whether an
omnibus is necessary or if we can publish individual collections.

OK, I made some tweaks to the template and imported your spreadsheet
into it.

You can make a copy from
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1T4mK-ehA9OvMAThIc6nw1xrr6gMiN4aK0oTjbJsiWW4/edit?gid=0#gid=0
and then finish up your edits.

Let me know when you're done. Thanks!

Actually, I gave you edit access to the sheet on the SE account, so just
edit that directly. Thanks!

I see some people are updating their spreadsheets to the new format.
Please let me know when you do that, as I'm still making small tweaks to
the template.

I've organized the spreadsheets page to list those that are in the new
format vs the legacy format. If you want to edit any that are in the new
format, let me know so I can give you access.

I wanted to edit the Somerset Maugham spreadsheet that I made a few years ago, but the link is invalid. The most likely explanation is that I deleted it from my Google drive, but maybe you have a copy somewhere on your end Alex? Not a huge deal either way since I basically copied the data from here, and I guess re-copying it from there wouldn't be much more work than copying it from an unorganized spreadsheet.

Do you want us to include short work that is already on SE, but not part of an omnibus? For Maugham I'm thinking specifically of Ashenden and On a Chinese Screen. They're not really relevant for future productions, but maybe for research purposes it's good to note that we are aware of them and that they don't need to go into an omnibus, especially since some of the works may have alternate titles.

I don't have a copy, no. You might just have to start over.

I think Ashenden was a kind of compilation? They are a series of shorts.
So yes they should go in the spreadsheet so that we have a complete
overview of where all his short fiction fits. You can also add Chinese
Screen since I think it was first published in one volume but perhaps
some of the vignettes may have been anthologized later.

Ashenden wasn't really a compilation. A few of the stories were published in magazines first, but most were first published as part of a collection called Ashenden.

Anyways, I've redone the spreadsheet. For future reference, are you planning to host a copy on your end? I should probably be more careful when cleaning out my Google Drive anyways.

Apparently Daphne Du Maurier has a few public domain stories, so I'm also working a spreadsheet for her.

Can you give me access?

Yes, from now on I'm going to make a copy to the SE account, and give
the person in charge editor access so they can edit that copy instead.
That way we won't lose spreadsheets in the future.

Whoops, sorry.  You should have access now.

Here's the spreadsheet for Du Maurier. I think I'd like to start producing it. I'll start a thread shortly.

Great, thanks. I've cloned the Maugham sheet so please work on this copy
from now on:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1OYPAAycKaTUZDM9y_m4a4tpfYeTzkmVM2boQxfl68l0/edit?gid=0#gid=0

Here is the Du Maurier copy for you to work from:

Thanks!

I'm a bit spreadsheet-phobic, so I'm taking the Trollope Shorts data in stages. I've got all the data needed in my "INI" file format, and have converted it to CSV format, which is now in a Google Sheet here:

Is there a simple way of dropping this into the SE Research Template? I've attempted to copy/paste using the CRTL-SHIFT-V method as instructed, but I'm not having much success.

Open the template and use "make a copy" to copy it into your own
account. Then in the old sheet, select an entire column, copy, and then
paste into the new sheet without formatting using ctrl + shift + v. That
should be all there is to it, that's how I've converted the other legacy
spreadsheets. Formatting in the template is automatic, you shouldn't
copy any formatting over.

For the checkmarks, use TRUE or FALSE instead of Y/N. Then pasting in
should work for that too.

The SE Category column and the Is PD column are calculated automatically
so don't paste those in.

Doh! And here was me copy/pasting rows....

This should look better:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1vMQ8NKjb48fcg2kbCBpUefgkgGxUIWajUGLLOB2724U/edit?usp=sharing

I don't know that the three "missing" stories will ever be
include-able, but at least there's a record of what we've got.

Hope that helps!

I started work on a spreadsheet for Lovecraft. There possibly two stories that can be added now,  Celephaïs and Through the Gates of the Silver Key (in colab. with E. Hoffmann Price).

Lovecraft is complicated because we require the original magazine
publications. Subsequent publications often edited the works
significantly. So make sure the transcriptions you find actually match
the page scans. If you can't find page scans then don't list the
transcription because we can't verify it, just make a note. You could
add a custom column for non-cleared transcription links and someone can
revisit them at a later date.

In Lovecraft's case we must strictly rely on PG's clearance to work on a
story many of his magazine publications are PD due to non-renewal and
not age.

Should I create a spreadsheet for Gilbert Murray's translations of Aeschylus' plays? The next play will be available in 2026. There are transcriptions listed on Faded Page.

I don't think we need a spreadsheet since we're not doing an omnibus,
but you can create placeholders for them. Make sure to put the
publication year and the system will mark it as "not PD yet".

I can do that. It looks like we'll also use his translations for Euripides. Would you like me to updates those as well?

I'm thinking about doing RLS poetry and George Macdonald poetry as a future projects. I've made spreadsheets with the new template.

OK great. I've made a copy of the RLS spreadsheet and added you as an
editor, so you can work on our copy from now on.

We already have a George Macdonald spreadsheet so I've added your poems
info to that one:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1BcKbCc9s08jOdEaRbuRIelPDqwvM3TxTAFl2NcJgrI8/edit?gid=0#gid=0

Probably the only question is whether Within and Without belongs in a
collection or not. What is the word count? If it's shorter than 12,500
words then it can go in the omnibus, but any longer and it's regular
play length and can be its own ebook.

As it happens, we have a Voltaire, Works spreadsheet. I was just updating my HQ listing, and noticed Voltaire's _Zadig_ is an HQ title, and we have a placeholder for it.

It turns out it's about 32k words, but _Zadig_'s not in the spreadsheet. This puts us in a somewhat similar situation as we had with with Buchan's first Edward Leithen title: a sub-40K work that's part of a series.

I just thought I'd flag it here so we can make a note of it, one way or the other, in case someone picks up _Zadig_ to produce.

The spreadsheet is for Voltairine de Cleyre, who is not Voltaire, though
she shares a similar first name.

I don't think we have a Voltaire short works spreadsheet, though Zadig
would certainly fit.

I would be interested to help with this. Maybe I could start with one such I’ve done, for the H. G. Wells short fiction?

You might have missed this David, but there’s a standardised spreadsheet process now: https://standardebooks.org/contribute/spreadsheets

Yes, H. G. Wells would be a good start. Check out the link Robin sent
for the standardized spreadsheet, it should be fairly self-explanatory.
You can also look at some of the existing sheets to get an idea of how
things are organized.

Another spreadsheet that would be very helpful is Craig Kennedy stories.
Craig Kennedy is a Sherlock Holmes type character by Arthur B. Reeve. I
started working on a book called "The Silent Bullet" because everything
I read online suggested it's a novel, but it's actually a collection of
short stories. So, we need to catalog all of the Craig Kennedy stories
to see if any of them are novels, and if there are duplicate shorts
across the various compilations that were published in Reeve's lifetime.

I improved the Rudyard Kipling spreadsheet. Besides Wikipedia and ISFDB, I used this as the primary source.

A question about non-English authors: What should I do if I can't complete the spreadsheet because the sources are in languages I don't speak?

I plan on producing a  short fiction collection by Akutagawa Ryūnosuke (as soon as the book is posted to PG), but some places put his corpus at about 150 short stories, and I only found about 50, translated or not, so far. Since I don't speak Japanese it is unlikely that I'll manage to fill the spreadsheet completely any time soon. In this case should I simply put all the works I can find and leave the spreadsheet to be completed in the future? I know this is not ideal, but it might otherwise stop the production of interesting titles (a similar situation occurs with Rabindranath Tagore and Mór Jokái).

What is your guidance/opinion on this, Alex?

Is there any academic material on this? For Tanizaki I picked up a copy of Tanizaki in Western Languages that gave me a (presumably) complete bibliography of all the translations at least.

Wikipedia has a good list of the works translated, but I couldn't find a list of his works in general; and also I'm yet to find a similar source as the one you mentioned of Tanizaki. I'm sure there is a complete list somewhere, but it will likely be in Japanese. I wonder if there is a Japanese speaker here who can help with this. I think I'll try to email a professor of Japanese literature in the (unlikely) possibility that s/he can point me to what I need.

We're only interested in English translations anyway. If none exist then
just don't include them in the spreadsheet for now.
