The next Balzac, repository here. I finished proofing The Jealousies of a Country Town, so I need something to read while I’m looking for cover art and writing descriptions.

OK! Robin will manage this with Weijia reviewing.

Ok, noted.

I think this works well for the “lily of the valley” of the title, found here in the artwork database.

Weijia, I believe this is ready for review.

The only note is that modernize wants to make two changes that should not be accepted—Outre-mer is correct, and jesuitical is lowercased per M-W. (Spelling unconditionally changes jesuit to Jesuit without regard to what follows.)

Ok, I will try to get to it soon.

Looks very good as always, Vince. I have just a few minor remarks.

The review is mostly done but we have a question to kick upwards. This book has many instances of a French phrase followed by a parenthetical note with the translation (example here). Should these be converted into endnotes? We have done things like that in other productions before.

The other side of the discussion… I wouldn’t call a half-dozen “many,” but regardless, others of them are denoted as part of the text, e.g. “on the shoals le jard, as the coarse gravel deposited by the Loire is called…” I don’t think it makes sense to do a handful and leave the others. Also, this is the fifteenth or sixteenth production in the Comédie, and I haven’t done this on any of the previous ones.

Yes we have definitely done that before, and I would say yes, if it's a
parenthetical that is clearly not running prose then it should be pulled
out to an endnote instead.

Vince if you noticed this often in previous Balzac, would it be as
simple as a regex like

</i> \(

to find possible candidates for endnote conversion?

I haven’t noticed it because I wasn’t looking for it because I didn’t care, I just know I haven’t done it on any of the others.

That will catch some of them—it’s how I got an initial count earlier—but there are one or two in Lily where the parenthetical comes after other intervening text, so I had to abandon that and just look at every French phrase. There were only a couple of dozen in Lily, so it wasn’t too bad.

I’ll change Lily, and I still have to do descriptions for Jealousies so I’ll make a pass through it, and I’ll try to remember to look for it going forward. But this is all over the corpus; we have done this before, but we have definitely not standardized this to date. (And at this point it goes without saying I don’t think we should.)

Who should we assigning the endnotes role to?

If you need help, I can go through some of the finished books to look
for parenthetical. Just send me a list of which ones I should look at.

Using the regex I suggested I went through and updated:

- Beatrix

- Modeste Mignon

- Parisians in the Country

- Shorts from Scenes from a Private Life

- The Celibates
