Hello,
I am ready to start my first project. I chose this book off the Wanted Ebooks list.
Here are the files I found to use:

Thanks!

Great, that one would be a good start.

I see a dedication and epigraph, so you'll also have to add a half title
page. There's also some other verse in there, see the manual for copy
and paste styling.

The big problem with this transcription is the use of ALL CAPS instead
of italics. You'll have to restore italics based on the page scans, so
please carefully eyeball each page of the page scans to see if there are
any other italics, including italicized `I`.

Make sure to read the Standard Ebooks Manual of Style before starting,
as you won't know what to fix if you haven't read the standards. In
particular, please closely review the semantics, high level patterns,
and typography sections:

https://standardebooks.org/manual

https://standardebooks.org/manual/latest/4-semantics

https://standardebooks.org/manual/latest/7-high-level-structural-patterns

https://standardebooks.org/manual/latest/8-typography

The step by step guide will take you from start to finish:

https://standardebooks.org/contribute/producing-an-ebook-step-by-step

Please email often if you have any questions at all. Our standards are
well-established so there is probably already a standard for formatting
whatever problem you've encountered.

When you're ready, email back with a link to your Github repository so
that I can mark you as having started.

Have fun! :)

Hi Alex,
I am doing fine with the command line and am on step 8 after typogrify.
I feel stupid, but I am not sure how to add special characters like a word joiner (U+2060) or a hair space (U+200A).
I have opened up other SE book using Calibre, but didn’t find the answer, and the examples just include <wj>. I don’t use html entities like right?
I am on macOS Monterey. I am not committed to a text editor—I am using BBEdit, but can jump on another app if one is recommended.
thanks!

You rarely have to—typogrify does it for you. Unfortunately, BBEdit does not have a “view invisibles” mode like Sublime and other editors, so you can’t see them in the editor proper. But if you move the cursor right from the character before an em-dash, e.g., you’ll notice that it doesn’t move on the screen when you hit the arrow the first time—it’s passing over the “invisible” character. You can see them in the Character Inspector [Window / Palettes / Character Inspector] if you highlight the characters.

You can use the Unicode Hex Input keyboard (Keyboard Preferences) to insert them. It has the advantage of being free and the disadvantage of having to switch keyboards each time.
Many of us here use a third-party tool (Typinator and/or Keyboard Maestro or both) to do this and many other things. It’s a lot easier, but it requires purchasing the tool(s) and the configuring them.

Visual Studio Code works on mac and has extensions for unicode. I use "Insert Unicode" and it allows you to input characters by name, but I've also bound a few of the more common ones (quotation marks, ellipsis, etc) to specific keyboard shortcuts.

Thanks! I have both Code and Sublime so I will switch to one of those.

BBEdit does indeed have a view invisibles mode. I use it all the time.

You can also put codes into it, but it’s not easy…

Key phrase: “like Sublime and other editors”. :) BBEdit’s is useless, IMO, as it doesn’t distinguish what the invisibles are, it includes things in “invisibles” that shouldn’t be (tabs, spaces, etc.), and so on. The Gremlins packages on Sublime and/or VS Code (for example) are much more useful and more user-friendly. I use BBEdit, but this is one of the areas where BBEdit severely lags behind their competition.

Interesting. I’ve been very fond of BBEdit, but have been using VS Code recently for, well, coding; and I like it a lot for that. I’ll give it a try for working on SE projects.
