On a Pincushion, by Mary de Morgan

I'm about 1/5 in proofreading my current project (purposely taking my time), and would like to use the time before the semester starts to also produce 2 or 3 short projects, all of which are fairy tales by Mary de Morgan.

A while ago I proposed an omnibus of her fairy tales, but was told we would want separate editions for each of the three collections. So this would be the project for the first. This one is a about 43k words, and the other two are a little below 40k.

One thing to consider is if we want the full title (On a Pincushion, and Other Fairy Tales) or just the main title, which is present in the half titlepage (On a Pincushion). What do think is better? I think just the main title is best because it fits better with our other editions.

For the cover, I'm thinking this painting, which I think looks good to illustrate the first story, which involves a vain girl. What do you think?

I started proofreading, and should be done quite soon, this being a short work.

I would like to know your opinion on something: this book has a total of seven stories plus a small "introduction," which serves to establish a meta narrative, of some pins telling stories. The first three stories are actually part of this narrative, with the remaining four stories being stand-alone. Should I simply treat them as separate stories or group the first four?

Grouping them would lead to the book looking like this:

Titlepage

On a Pincushion ("introduction")

    First three stories

Remaining four stories

Colophon

I understand that this is somewhat unusual situation, and would appreciate any ideas.

I think that given that we’ve called the whole thing On a Pincushion it wouldn’t make much sense to have a subdivision also called “On a Pincushion”. If we were going to do that, I’d lean towards renaming the entire production. Personally, I think I’d leave them as originally planned.

But I could easily be swayed if you disagree.

On a Pincushion isn't actually a heading in the first story (it doesn't have one), but I called it like this in ToC because the third story ("The Story of the Opal") ends with "End of On a Pincushion," so I considered that to be the title of the first "story." Since neither you nor I have strong opinions, I'll leave this as-is for now, and maybe if Alex thinks differently I can change it.

At page 75 there is a passage that says "[...] directly they forgot to behave [...]." This seems strange, do you think there should be an "if" before "they"? Editorial of course.

No, this is OK. It’s slightly archaic of course; a more modern writing of the same sentence might be “heavy misfortune would fall on them as soon as they forgot to behave well”. But not something we’d change.

Nice work Hendrik. A few issues in to look at. I think your suggestion on the structure above makes sense from a navigation point of view, so let's at least try that and see how it looks. I didn't read any of the stories myself so I can't say much, but your long description looks pretty good to me. As you said it would be hard to write much more without giving away plot points.

sub-stories. Are these sub-stories related by plot? If so, then they
should be <section> instead of <article>.

They form a meta narrative of three sewing utensils telling the stories (hence the book title), but the stories themselves don't have any plot connection with each other or the "parent" story. I never encountered this situation before. Should I change them to sections?

Sorry, I misunderstood what you meant. Now that I'm thinking better, <section> might be appropriate. the setting story, "On a Pincushion, " I feel is definitely an <article>, since it is an item in the book, much like the other stories. These three stories could be argued to be articles of the setting story, but I would consider each a part of a larger narrative, so <section> would be better. I can change it later when I get home.

The presence of <article> instead of <section> ended up being a vestigial characteristic from when they wouldn't be grouped together. Since this situation isn't very common no one of us ended up noticing, I supposed.
