I would like to do The Cossacks by Leo Tolstoy.

It is one of the recommended options for a first production.
I recently read a non Public Domain translation.

Great, that one would be a good start.

Looks pretty straightforward. There is some verse, see the manual for
styling.

Make sure to read the Standard Ebooks Manual of Style before starting,
as you won't know what to fix if you haven't read the standards. In
particular, please closely review the semantics, high level patterns,
and typography sections:

https://standardebooks.org/manual

https://standardebooks.org/manual/latest/4-semantics

https://standardebooks.org/manual/latest/7-high-level-structural-patterns

https://standardebooks.org/manual/latest/8-typography

The step by step guide will take you from start to finish:

https://standardebooks.org/contribute/producing-an-ebook-step-by-step

This page on common issues in older books may be useful:

https://standardebooks.org/contribute/how-tos/common-issues-when-working-on-public-domain-ebooks

Please email often if you have any questions at all. Our standards are
well-established so there is probably already a standard for formatting
whatever problem you've encountered.

When you're ready, email back with a link to your Github repository so
that I can mark you as having started.

Have fun! :)

Make sure to read this section of the manual carefully when it comes to selecting a cover: https://standardebooks.org/manual/1.8.4/10-art-and-images#10.3.3.7

OK, Robin will manage this with David reviewing.

So it looks like this book has issues where the PG text is a transcription of a later 1935 Maude translation which makes it ineligible for this project.
I searched "cossacks" in the group and this has been discovered a couple times.
I would suggest removing The Cossacks from the list of wanted titles (or at least put a note about the status of PG).
If I am missing something let me know.

I think I’m going to need Alex to weigh in here, as it’s a potential copyright issue. Alex, this is what you wrote last time:

Since we're back on the topic, I went to look up page scans.

Here is the original Maude, with an intro from Maude dated 1916 that we found last time: https://archive.org/details/in.ernet.dli.2015.97297/page/n15/mode/2up

Here is another Maude, with an intro from Maude dated 1935: https://archive.org/details/dli.bengal.10689.11190/page/n281/mode/2up

Note how the 1935 one matches PG!

And here is one credited to NHD dated 1888: https://books.google.com/books?id=q9gTAAAAQAAJ

This one matches neither.

So maybe PG was correct, but they were using a revised version of the translation without realizing it?

Usually we’re fine with going with what PG has as they’re pretty strict on making sure they have the right clearances, but I’ve known them to be wrong in the past.

Hmm, yes, I see the problem. Sorry it was not documented better. I've
updated the wanted list to make a note of this and moved it to the
'advanced' section for now, so we can work on it in a few years.

Sorry for the mixup, but you can start on another book if you'd like
instead. Just let us know what interests you, in a new mailing list thread.
