Still ploughing through Beatrix Potter and Poe, but I fancy a simpler production to keep things fun. I’ve had my eye on https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/65553 for a while, but no-one has scans of any PD provenance. What does exist though is a scan on archive.orghttps://archive.org/details/inspectorfrenchs0000crof/page/n5/mode/1up. This is listed as being a 2016 edition, but specifically the copyright is marked as 1924. Does this count as acceptable Alex?

Even if not, we have precedence for producing using a PG transcription without scans, e.g. War and Peace and others. (I’m sure you know that, just in case…)

Yes, that's fine. We just need the original copyright year somewhere on
the page.

Tried hacking together the first edition cover as an SE cover, but unfortunately the murder is completely obscured. Back to the drawing board 😅

I don't think it's TOO bad, actually kind of funny in a way. But I guess
the book isn't a comedy :) I wouldn't be opposed to just using that

OK! Well, I’m not having any other luck: there’s a paucity of paintings of safes, diamonds, bundles of pound notes, and other things in the first few chapters. So I’ll leave it like this, but if I find any better options later on I’ll revisit it.

Right, ready for review: https://github.com/robinwhittleton/freeman-wills-crofts_inspector-frenchs-greatest-case

  • Stuck with the artwork as above, nothing better came up.
  • Fairly simple production in general, but a handful of semantics, and a bunch of tables in chapter 17.
  • Moden Gutenberg, so high quality transcription. Just 3 errors reported back.
  • Semanticate will try to add roman semantics to “Mrs. X” which is in a bunch of places throughout the book.
  • This is the first in the Inspector French series (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inspector_French) so I’ve created a new collection in the metadata.
  • Editorial updated funiculaire -> funicular, as it’s effectively soundalike.

Classic Freeman Wills Crofts otherwise, the puzzle is dismantled like clockwork.

That's a clever use of counter() in the table, but I don't think there's
going to be ereader support for that and we can't decompose it. Can you
just replace those counters with text?

Same with `tfoot > tr.first-child td:not(:empty)` etc, I don't think
:not() is going to have good support and we don't decompose it at the
moment either. I think that one can safely be replaced with `tfoot td + td`

Yep, fair point, had my web hat on, not my epub hat. I’ll fix these. I checked the corpus for other uses of :not:empty) and I’d pulled the same trick in Poe’s short fiction, so I’ll fix it there too.

Having said that, we might as well add support for bare :empty as it’s trivial. Done this in this PR: https://github.com/standardebooks/tools/pull/549 .

Ok, fixed both this and Poe.
