Hi!

I'd be interested in producing my first ebook. I'd be most interested in doing Moving the Mountain by Charlotte Perkins Gilman; it's not on the wanted list, but I think it would be a suitable entry-level book, and the 'sequel' is already on SE.

Let me know if this would be an okay choice!

Thanks,
Caleb

Great, that one would be a good start.

There is a preface so you will have to add a half title page. Everything
else should be straightforward.

Make sure to read the Standard Ebooks Manual of Style before starting,
as you won't know what to fix if you haven't read the standards. In
particular, please closely review the semantics, high level patterns,
and typography sections:

https://standardebooks.org/manual

https://standardebooks.org/manual/latest/4-semantics

https://standardebooks.org/manual/latest/7-high-level-structural-patterns

https://standardebooks.org/manual/latest/8-typography

The step by step guide will take you from start to finish. Please follow
it exactly:

https://standardebooks.org/contribute/producing-an-ebook-step-by-step

This page on common issues in older books may be useful:

https://standardebooks.org/contribute/how-tos/common-issues-when-working-on-public-domain-ebooks

Please email often if you have any questions at all. Our standards are
well-established so there is probably already a standard for formatting
whatever problem you've encountered.

When you're ready, email back with a link to your Github repository so
that I can assign you a manager and reviewer.

Have fun! :)

Great! Thanks and here's the link to the repo

Let me know if there are any issues, it's been a number of years since I last used git 😅

Just getting through some semantics. How should I handle a pluralised initialism? FFV is Founding Families of Virginia btw. In the transcript it is:

"what happened to the Four Hundred—the F.F. V’s—and the rest of the aristocracy?"

Would this be:
"what happened to the Four Hundred—the <abbr epub:type="z3998:initialism>F.F.V.</abbr>s—and the rest of the aristocracy?”

Or would the plural go inside the tag? or some other solution?

Yeah I think you want the plural outside the abbreviation tags there as you suggested.

Regarding the git repo, everything looks in order there. Off to a good start!

Perfect! I was wondering about how to handle this (image from the scan below). It's a lettered list but in quoted speech. I assume that you could use <ol> like in line 30 of this, however, that would render as numbers (I assume?) and they would be outside of the speech marks. If left without list formatting, would need some kind of tag (<abbr>?) to help handle the 'a.', 'b.', etc.? Thanks!

You can use an <ol type="lower-alpha">

That's good to know about that - I had no idea. But unfortunately it doesn't seem to look right with that. That ends up as this (with the quotation marks on the wrong side of the ordered list letters):

a. “Free, healthy, independent, intelligent mothers.
b. “Enough to live on—right conditions for child-raising.
c. “Specialized care.
d. “The new social consciousness, with its religion, its art, its science, its civics, its industry, its wealth, its brilliant efficiency. That’s your outline.”

In the story, the character would definitely be saying a, b, c, d in their speech. Would it be better to move it inline? Which would be something like this (although perhaps there's a more correct way for the letters than what I use below):

<p>“Suppose we begin this way: a) Free, healthy, independent, intelligent mothers. b) Enough to live on—right conditions for child-raising. c) Specialized care. d) The new social consciousness, with its religion, its art, its science, its civics, its industry, its wealth, its brilliant efficiency. That’s your outline.”</p>

Correct, it's not possible to use <ol> here because there's no mechanism
in HTML to insert quotes at the right places. So there's nothing special
you have to do, just treat is regular running prose.
