I would like to do this project next, since it is at the top of the moderate difficulty list.

If there are no objections, I would like to know if there is an example or reference document I can follow for how to deal with the photographs in the book. I didn't see much in the online documentation about how to handle this case. I see that the Project Gutenberg version has images in it, are they of sufficient quality to reuse, and if not, how do I go about rectifying that situation?

Thank you!

Sure, you can work on that.

This has been attempted twice before. Please search the mailing list to
find those threads and review them for intro information and any gotchas.

For images, see https://standardebooks.org/manual/1.9.0/single-page#7.8

Since these are nonfiction photos we would keep them all. PG looks like
fine but not great resolution. If you can find higher resolution scans,
for example the direct page scans, then it would be better to extract
those. If using PG's images you would have to autocrop them to remove
white borders. If using page scans then you'd have to rotate them to be
straight, and convert to grayscale.

Please send a link to your repo once you start!

Thank you Alex!

I didn't realize this production had been attempted so many times previously. I have read through the earlier threads and will be sure to consult them when I get stuck but otherwise I will attempt to adhere closely to the step-by-step guide, and I will be sure to check in at least weekly with progress since it looks like stalling out is a problem on this one.

OK, Robin will manage with Weijia reviewing.

In one of the earlier threads the question was raised about whether the dedication should be treated with some of the semantics of a letter, since it appears to have that form. I did not see an answer to that question. Robin, can you clarify?

Otherwise, I am in the manual typographical changes step.

No, dedications are never letters, though they may be shaped like letters.

Hi, checking in.

Today I extracted images and put them in the repository. I also fixed the markup for the images, except for the alt tag which will take a bit more time.

I made a commit for this, but if this isn't part of the standard repository structure I can amend an earlier commit, please let me know if this is desired.

Is it important for the illustration-N IDs to be unique across the book? I suspect so but my editor made it simple to make them consistent across a file instead. If this is important I'll change it.

Thank you,

Yes, please change them to illustration-x file naming. Obviously it works without it, but it’s much easier for long-term maintenance if projects are consistent over the whole corpus.

The images seem to have quite large filesizes. It might be worth investigating exporting them at a lower quality? For example, I grabbed a-doily-bear.jpg which is currently 1.4MB, loaded it into an image editor, and re-exported at 80 quality. This gave me an image that looked pretty much exactly the same, but came in at 582KB, or 42% of the size.

If you want some guidance on the alt text feel free to reply with some initial attempts.

OK, I fixed this.

I have converted them to quality 80 and they are now all in the 0.5-0.8 MB territory, 36 MB for all the images.

If you want some guidance on the alt text feel free to reply with some initial attempts.

Yes, that would be very helpful!

For illustration 1: “A man riding a horse with 8 dogs walking alongside”
For illustration 2: “A bobcat in a tree with ears back looking down at a dog which is looking up at it”
For illustration 3: “A bobcat sitting in a tree branch looking right”
For illustration 4: “Four men on horseback in front of a cabin with several dogs”

Please let me know how I can improve these!

Thank you,

Note that the original, highest quality images must remain in ./images/.
Then you can compress them and include them in ./src/epub/images/

Thanks Alex, I misunderstood that but have made the appropriate fix.

Also note that a jpg optimizer can reduce things even further without affecting quality. I run one locally, but there are several available online. It will reduce them another 25% or so, which here means another 9MB, which is significant enough to be worth the trouble.

Good start on all the alternative texts. I’d probably add a little more text about the surroundings, to give a good flavour of the scene. For example: “A man riding on a horse over a snowy hillside, alongside by eight dogs.” But you’ve definitely got the overall idea!

Thank you Robin!

I’ve done the footnotes-to-endnotes step, and I’ll go back and handle the alt texts (and fixup the commit history properly).

Robin,

I have added the other alt texts; I’m sure there is much to improve here. If you want to take a look now I’m through that part; if you’d rather wait til I get further along that’s fine too.

Maybe you didn’t push them? I can only see meaningful alt text in chapter 1. Having said that, really nice work on those ones. I don’t need to review the rest based on those.

I’m through the initial cleanup of the chapter files; I still have some work to do to get through the lint process to get ready for the proofreading.

I would like to suggest this image for the cover art: https://standardebooks.org/artworks/carl-oscar-borg/a-knight-of-the-west

There is another cleared and unused image of Teddy Roosevelt but I think it would be more appropriate for a different book than this as he’s wearing formal attire, and this image seems to capture the spirit of many of the chapters better than the other images of hunting I found.

Thank you,

Robin,

Just checking in to say I’m starting the proofreading process. There are still lint issues but, as the step-by-step guide says, the content.opf etc. should be dealt with after the proofread. So that’s where I’m at.
