This is directed mainly to Alex, because I want to persuade him of something.

This is to do with this book:
Famous Paintings Selected from the World's Great Galleries and Reproduced in Colour

This is a wonderful collection of famous paintings, reproduced in colour, published in two volumes. I want to be able to use both volumes as a source of cover illustrations for S.E.

Here's my argument:

1) Check HathiTrust here for evidence that there were two volumes : https://catalog.hathitrust.org/Record/100631901/Home). Hathi unfortunately only has links which are limited to search only.

2) However,  Internet Archive has both volumes scanned, but they are slightly different editions, one perhaps being the international edition of an originally British publication.

3) One volume, which I think is Volume 2, has a publication date  of 1913 shown here: https://archive.org/details/famouspaintings02chesuoft/famouspaintings02chesuoft/page/n8/mode/1up

4) The first volume, which of course is the one I want to use a painting from, does not have a publication date, which is the problem! That's here: https://archive.org/details/famouspaintings01chesuoft/famouspaintings01chesuoft

5) Both volumes are introduced by G. K. Chesteron, and the work is listed in the bibliography of a book on Chesterton here: https://hdl.handle.net/2027/uc1.b3334528?urlappend=%3Bseq=195%3Bownerid=9007199274164885-205 . This shows a publication date of 1912.

7) Is this enough evidence to say that the first volume (which I want to use) is in the public domain, and that therefore any paintings in it are provably in the public domain?

Sorry, should have added in step 6 that the biography of Chesterton is itself in the public domain, published in 1916: https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=uc1.b3334528&seq=11&view=1up

The Hathi links show full scans for me, and you're right, the volume
without a date at IA is identical to Hathi's volume 1 which has a 1912
date printed where you'd expect. Not sure why IA's scan omits the date
but the books are identical otherwise. So you can use those scans.

Great, thanks. When I have time I’ll go through both volumes and add the works not already there into our PD art collection.

Whew! Volume 1 artworks submitted to our collection. I added about 30 new paintings.

On to Volume 2!

All right, Volume 2 artworks submitted, about another 30 paintings. Some great potential covers there!

Can you edit these submissions to use the page scan link for the
copyright year that I included in your other submissions? Then you don't
have to use the "exception" field, but you can use the "notes" field to
include the same note that I did for the rest. See what I did for for
example https://standardebooks.org/artworks/walter-dendy-sadler/a-good-story
