I’d like to attempt "EIGHT HUNDRED LEAGUES ON THE AMAZON" by Jules Verne as my next effort. I note that there are two parts, each with 20 chapters, should be fun!

OK. Before you begin, please do some research to to see who translated
the PG transcription, and if that translation is widely considered
acceptable. Verne was widely translated and the translations are often
bad. We don't want to host a bad translation.

I think that W. J. Gordon is the canonical translator for this book based on these following web items.

It seems like W. J. Gordon is the original translator, evidenced by this original edition on sale:
I mostly see this translator associated with the book in numerous places on the web and the text of the first sentence in the PG edition matches what I see on line and in various places. The one scan I found doesn’t have a copyright date, though, so I will have to do some more digging on that.

The question is whether it’s considered a good translation. As our most notable example, the same things you noted would be true of 20,000 Leagues, but it’s widely considered a bad translation, so we don’t host an edition.

Hmmm, I wonder how we decide whether it’s a good translation or not?
In any case, to be PD would the translation also need to be from before 1929 or is it permissible to use a modern translation? I’ve seen some of those around as well.

By researching opinions on it. That’s how it was determined that 20,000 Leagues was no good.
It has to be a PD translation, however it got to be PD. It’s possible but unlikely that a post-1929 translation didn’t have its copyright renewed, but if one was found, it would to go through PG’s Rule 6 review to have their confirmation it was actually PD.

I’ve asked the Redditor about his opinion of the translation.
They had a reference to a page of “ranked” translations, but it was the same page I linked below.
I asked ChatGPT and it mentioned another translator by the name of William Henry Giles Kingston. I found a version that he translated:

Ok, I’m manually semanticating now. I’m seeing lots of these quoted italics coming from word introductions, not speech. I’m assuming I drop the quotes? Is that editorial?

I’m not sure they are meant to be pronounced, they are more like literal code. Is this the place to use <q> tags?

On the italics, you can drop the quotes (editorial commit). I think you can normalise to capitaes do mato, again in an editorial commit.
On the code, the full block always seems to be in it’s own paragraph, so I’d suggest a blockquote. Also, we see that later sections of the code are quoted, and aligned with numbers. For the alignment you’ll need to either use a table, or set a monospace font. If you go down the second option you’ll probably also want to style the blockquotes to be monospace as well?
