Next on my list of epic poems is Don Juan.

Now that I've taken a longer look at the poem I've decided to go with this transcription with notes. There are lots of references to books and people throughout the work, and the notes help a lot with that. The transcription looks like it also has less typos, making my work somewhat easier. Most work will be in the ~1,200 notes.

Also, do we want the author's name on the cover to be "Lord Byron", "George Byron", or "Lord George Byron"? It looks like almost all editions use "Lord Byron".

I found a painting for the cover:

Lord Byron is what he was known as, so go with that. Cover looks good!

Ok, I've finally finished proofreading the whole production! I still have some work to do, and I just have a couple questions.

1. There is a section titled "Preface to Cantos VI, VII, and VIII" that the editor Ernest Hartley Coleridge decided to place in the middle of the poem. This was done because the cantos were published in chunks. When Byron went to publish cantos VI, VII, and VIII, his publisher John Murray refused; John Hunt became Byron's new publisher and published Cantos VI, VII, and VIII with a preface. Some editions of Don Juan don't include the preface at all.

Should the Preface stay in the middle of the poem or be moved to the frontmatter? I thought it would be better in the frontmatter, because the editor's  Introduction contains information about the change in publishers.

2. There are brackets around notes that were added by Coleridge; the notes not in brackets are by a preceding editor or Byron himself. I cannot really tell which notes are by Byron or a preceding editor. 90% of the notes by Coleridge are quoted text from other works.

Should I keep the brackets or get rid of them?

I should have known I’d get hard questions on this production 🙂

1. I think I agree with you that this should be in the frontmatter, given your observation about the note on the change of publishers. Add the change of position to the publication notes though.

2. As we can’t distinguish non-bracketed notes leave them as is, but our convention when we know notes are from different people is to cite them. You can cite with the initials rather than the full name, and then remove the brackets. See https://standardebooks.org/manual/1.8.0/single-page#7.10.5.3.

I see a lot of instances where <em> was used, but it's really a language
tag that's appropriate. For example:

<em>Podefar</em>, for instance, which is supposed to stand for “Poor
dear foolish rogue,”

The <em>salmi</em>, the <em>consommé</em>, the <em>purée</em>,

In the latter case, these are italicized as Italian/French loan words,
so they would have <i xml:lang="fr"> and not <em>; however these are now
just modern English so italics should be removed. (`Salmi` is of course
`salami`, but it's not sound alike so I suppose we can keep italics here
for clarity.)

Can you review the rest of the <em>s to make sure we're correctly using
<i> instead of <em> and removing <i> for old loan words?

I'll take another look.

FWIW, "Podefar" isn't a foreign word. The abbreviation "Pdfr." for "Poor dear foolish rogue" is pronounced as "Podefar."

Ok, I've adjusted some of the italics. There are some foreign phrases surrounded by <em> elements, but they are inside <blockquote>s with language tags.

If the brackets are meant to differentiate editor's notes from author's
notes, we should remove them and add an appropriate <cite> instead.
