Hello, I've read several books from the collection, and would like to contribute back.

I want to choose The World Set Free by H. G. Wells as my first project. Some related information:
There's one small problem about the preface. It was written in 1921. According to (Seed, 2003), the preface is written by Wells in 1921 for the Collins 1924 reprint (or 1921 according to Google Scholar citation). All available scans are from the 1914 first edition, therefore don't have the preface. I sampled some segments from the rest of the text and they are conform with the PG version. I plan to leave the preface as-is.

The repository (right now it's only an initial commit): https://github.com/crvdgc/h-g-wells_the-world-set-free

Great, that one would be a good start.

Re. preface, that's fine.

It looks like there's also an epigraph and dedication, so those would go
as separate files in the frontmatter. You'll have to include a half
title too. See the manual for templates for all of those.

This is in British quoting style so you'll have to run `se
british2american` as part of the process. This script is very error
prone so careful proofreading will be required to fix any miscurled
quotes that may be inserted.

This PG transcription replaced italics with ALL CAPS. You'll have to
undo that, then eyeball the page scans for instances of italicized "I".

Make sure to remove leading all caps at the start of chapters. The page
scans have subsections as "§N" which I think we should keep; but chapter
titles can be replaced with a Roman numeral per SE style. Subesctions
will go in their own <section> element below the chapters.

Make sure to read the Standard Ebooks Manual of Style before starting,
as you won't know what to fix if you haven't read the standards. In
particular, please closely review the semantics, high level patterns,
and typography sections:

https://standardebooks.org/manual

https://standardebooks.org/manual/latest/4-semantics

https://standardebooks.org/manual/latest/7-high-level-structural-patterns

https://standardebooks.org/manual/latest/8-typography

The step by step guide will take you from start to finish:

https://standardebooks.org/contribute/producing-an-ebook-step-by-step

Please email often if you have any questions at all. Our standards are
well-established so there is probably already a standard for formatting
whatever problem you've encountered.

When you're ready, email back with a link to your Github repository so
that I can mark you as having started.

Have fun! :)

Hi, about the subsection, I didn't find relevant directions in the manual. Should I keep the § sign?

If the sign is kept, what format should it be? I'm thinking about "§ + a non-breakable space + a Roman number", within a <h3> tag.

If not, what should I use for the subsections? The chapters are already in Roman numbers, so using a bare Roman number for subsections can cause confusion.

What do you think?

Best,

Yes, you can keep the section symbol. It's more of a unique prose style
thing, which we explicitly can make exceptions for. Don't put an nbsp
though; in any case it's highly unlikely that an ereader would need to
break 2-3 characters into two lines.

Hi, I finished the book The World Set Free. Sorry for the delay. I will have more free time recently.

Here's the repository for the book: https://github.com/crvdgc/h-g-wells_the-world-set-free

Some questions:

1. For French words, I choose to use the English words for "regime", "role", but preserved "naïveté". I think I might need suggestions for all instances with `<i xml:lang="fr">` tags.
Furthermore, for `<i>lingua franca</i>`, I just kept the italics (It's English, right?).
2. The comma usage of the author is not regular (whether or not to use a Cambridge comma), I preserved all the usage from the PDF.
3. The section structure of chapter 4 is different. The Gutenberg version splits one section into two, therefore has one more section than the PDF version. I preserved the PDF version's structure.

And when I started the project, the toolset version was 1.5, now it's 1.9 (sorry again for the delay), should I run the commands like `se typogrify`again with the new version toolset? Are there other adjustments to be made (section structures, title tags) for the new version?

Best regards,
Ubikium

Modernize spelling should correct naïveté. Lingua francs is Latin, buts in Merriam Webster and so should not be italicized. See section 8.2 of the manual.

Yes, you should definitely update tools, and there will be a lot of changes. Lint will tell you what they are, and the manual will have the details.

Fixed.

I reran the commands again with 1.9 tool, the main changes are chapter titles and spaces before ellipses. I checked and find no particular issues.

The repository ( https://github.com/crvdgc/h-g-wells_the-world-set-free ) has been updated. Please review it.

By the way, the new tool sets the chapter titles to Roman numerals. The section titles also use Roman numerals. Should I change the section titles to Arabic numerals like 1, 2, 3?

Do you mean the headers? See section 7.2 of the manual. The manual will contain the answer to most (not all) questions.

I meant the choice rather than the implementation, but thanks anyway.

I've made several adjustments to the book. For the cover art, I'm thinking about We are Making a New World by Paul Nash (1918). It's based on the aftermath of WWI and has a hopeful tune. It fits in the novel's prediction of a world war, including the destruction effects and the hope to create human freedom.

The page states that "This work is in the public domain in the United States because it was published (or registered with the U.S. Copyright Office) before January 1, 1926."

The resolution is 4,950 × 3,876px, and we can crop the central part for the cover.

Ubi, unfortunately the PD clearance process is a bit more involved than that. You would either need to find an explicit CC0 disclaimer from a museum website that holds the painting or a link to a page scan of a public domain book that reproduces the image. In this case I think I might have found a suitable page scan, but Alex is the one who approves that so don't take my word for anything: https://www.google.com/books/edition/Illustrated_London_News/D104AQAAMAAJ?hl=en&gbpv=1&dq=Nash,+Paul+-+We+are+Making+a+New+World&pg=PA630&printsec=frontcover

Unfortunately, just because someone’s edited wikimedia to say that a picture is in the public domain doesn’t make that picture in the public domain. We rely on proof in the form of a photo in a dated book, or a CC0 grant.

Fortunately, I’ve got one of those for you 🙂 The Art of the Great War, page 181, copyright 1919: https://archive.org/details/artgreatwar00gall/page/181/mode/1up

The new commit should have fixed the issues.

One question: if we use `Prelude` as title and `The Sun Snares` as subtitle, the <title> can only be `Prelude`. All other chapters have something like `2: The Last War` as their <title>, is that okay? That was the original reason for me to mark `Prelude` as label and `The Sun Snares` as title.
