I’d poked at this before Loveday Brooke so I’ll carry on. Dorrnford Yates wanted to move away from light comedy and into more serious thrillers with Blind Corner. It’s the first in a series of books with the protagonist Richard Chandos so a new collection there.

(Plan is to go back and complete the C. L. Pirkis short fiction compilation after this, but that requires a bunch of transcription so will take longer.)

Just finding cover art left to do really, but a couple of “what would you do” sanity checks in the meantime:

  • “Shoot” to mean “chute”, used a whole bunch in the book. That’s a new one for me, but it’s in MW as “probably by folk etymology from French chute” so I’ve let it be. Feel right?
  • One of the antagonists is called “Rose” Noble. In all but I think 2 occasions, “Rose” is quoted. This gets a bit tiring given that we’re talking ~160 references in the book. For the time being I’m leaving it as is, but potentially we could editorially remove the quotes for references beyond the first. Thoughts?

1. Yes, I think you should leave it, especially if it is in Merriam-Webster.
2. I would be very tempted to remove the quotes editorially, especially since the book doesn't seem to be 100% consistent with using the quotes anyways.

I’ve spent literally four days hunting for art for this, and tbh I’m not 100% happy with the result, but it’ll do. I’m going with Gustave Courbet’s Grotto of Sarrazine near Nans-sous-Sainte-Anne; uploaded and assigned at https://standardebooks.org/artworks/gustave-courbet/grotto-of-sarrazine-near-nans-sous-sainte-anne.

All right, I’ll try to get to it this weekend.

The usual excellence, Robin, just a few issues/questions.

Question for Alex: in this phrase:

“Seein’ ’s better than believin’,”

would you like to make any change to remove the double rsquo?

Hmm... normally I would say yes but since it's double elision let's just
leave it as it is for clarity.
