I've just noticed that SE books are not rendering any images in Foliate (in "compatible" files; they look just fine in "advanced" files). Since it's been over a year since Foliate had a release, and it seems to rendering images in other books, I suspect the way images are being modified for "compatible" files have changed. Does SE retain previous versions of released ebooks I can use to compare and try to isolate the issue?

No, but it would be helpful if you attached an ebook that demonstrates
this problem and state exactly which images don't work.

That epub passes epubcheck. Extracting it with se extract-ebook shows
all images are there and rendered as PNGs. Opening the titlepage in a
browser shows it works. So this seems to be a Foliate error.

Just out of curiosity, is it possible that your laptop is in dark mode while Foliate is in light mode? I have noticed a similar issue with black-on-transparent SVGs when I view XHTML files directly in my web browser. My laptop is generally on dark mode but I use light mode in Firefox, so the SVG gets inverted and becomes displayed as white-on-white.

No, I'm in light mode.

OK, it seems maybe the addition of srcset="..." attributes to image tags is what's causing problems. Was this attribute added recently? It would definitely seem to be be a deficiency in Foliate's handling of this.

Yes, it was added recently. Our implementation is valid HTML5 so that
would point to Foliate.

I've filed a bug report in Foliate:

im having the same problem. its not just foliate. im having the same problem in googleplay for android phone and koodo reader for desktop. all images are not shown, instead just a jpeg symbol. its related to recent updates. all the books i download after these updates
  1. Aug 4, 2026

    Migrate from <dc:abstract> to <meta property="schema:abstract">

  2. Aug 3, 2026

Update metadata descriptions to new standards

  3. Aug 3, 2026

Update boilerplate CSS to new standards

dont show the images, either the titlepage image in all the books and the imprint page image, as well as any books with images. it just shows a box with a little shape, i think its the jpeg symbol.

Can someone chime in on if they're still working on Apple Books (on desktop and mobile)? I'm particularly concerned about if anybody has downloaded one from the Apple Books store; if this is an issue there, I'll have to revert the releases.

Sorry, I haven’t been paying attention to this thread. I don’t download anything from the store, but I read epubs exclusively on an iPad (which is still on iPadOS 18, if that matters). What do you want me to try, i.e. what specific ebook, and what problem am I looking for?

If you could download Flatland, as an example, and just check that you can see images where you would expect, I would be grateful.

It should work in a recent-ish iBooks, because the code that added
srcset was commented out specifically for very very old iBooks. That old
iBooks is now no longer a significant percentage of users.

FWIW I just downloaded Flatland from the Apple book store onto my iPad (an older 6th generation iPad running iPadOS 17.7) and all images appeared just fine.

I looked at the first half-dozen in both light and dark mode and they all looked fine.

I have zero experience with the Foliate codebase, but it seems to be using webkitgtk >= 2.40.1, which was released 2023-04-19. I had feedback from Apple on 2021-06-07 that the Webkit srcset bug was resolved. So I don’t think this is the same issue that we were seeing originally when we removed srcsets.
