I'd like to pitch this as my next project. Wikipedia says, "The novel is noted for its realistic depictions of 19th-century American rural life and for its use of local dialect."

There is a somewhat lengthy preface by the author, and a shorter one from the first edition. I assume I'll cut the illustrations.

OK, sure. Please send a link to your repo once you start.

I think we should keep the first edition preface, and not the library
edition preface. As you noted the library edition preface seems shorter,
it was probably condensed to fit the library format. It also includes an
excerpt from the first edition preface which also suggests that that
preface should be preferred.

Lukas, there is some interesting typography showing varying levels of emphasis in someone's speech. I'm not sure how to approach it given the usual rules for this, like avoiding using all caps.

I says-ah, ‘Wo, Berry-ah! Wo, Berry-ah! Wo BEERY-AH,   [this last part in small caps, this fits, I can use <em> and <strong> ]
...
and say, ‘Come, Buck-ah! Come, Buck-ah! Come, Buck-ah! COME, BUCK-AH!
[going progressively from no emphasis, to <em> italics, to <strong> small caps, to (even stronger?) ]

looks mad-ah, and says, Boo-oo-00-OO-ah!”
[this one is just a whole lot of things!]

Not Lukas, but take a look at the CSS for "Betrayed" for an idea. You might need to use classes here given how often this pattern appears.

Thanks Weijia. That looks like a very similar pattern.  I think I can use that idea.

After looking through a LOT of paintings, trying to find anything that might resemble a male schoolmaster in any kind of 19th century rustic scene, I settled on the little red schoolhouse that could be taken as a setting for the story (with a little cropping).  It's CC0 at the Met.

Looks good! I've assigned it.
