Good afternoon, everyone!

I was considering the novella Undine by Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué as my first production since it is of personal interest, but I believe it falls under the word count for short fiction mentioned in the collections policy. Would it still be acceptable for me to produce?

I am not opposed to creating an omnibus with Undine the author's three other novellas instead, but I am unsure of the organization's stance on an omnibus as a first project.

I would appreciate guidance on how to proceed.

Thanks,
Jasmine H.

Hello, you're right, that would be too short to produce individually. It
would go in a short fiction compilation, as it seems he wrote other
shorts (for example https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/2824 which was
published in the same volume as Undine).

Short fiction compilations require first compiling a research
spreadsheet, which can be a lot of work. For your first ebook, I suggest
starting with something easier. If you complete it then you could move
on to this project, provided it's of a reasonable size.

Would the author’s novel, The Magic Ring, be acceptable for a first project? It was originally published in three volumes, but it is a single novel.

Sure, that's a little longer than we like for first productions but it
looks very straightforward so you could work on it.

It looks like it was divided into volumes for that edition, but since
they're untitled I think you can remove the volume divisions and order
the chapters sequentially.

Each chapter has a bridgehead, see the manual for how to structure and
style those.

Otherwise this should be pretty straightforward.

Make sure to read the Standard Ebooks Manual of Style before starting,
as you won't know what to fix if you haven't read the standards. In
particular, please closely review the semantics, high level patterns,
and typography sections:

https://standardebooks.org/manual

https://standardebooks.org/manual/latest/4-semantics

https://standardebooks.org/manual/latest/7-high-level-structural-patterns

https://standardebooks.org/manual/latest/8-typography

The step by step guide will take you from start to finish. Please follow
it exactly:

https://standardebooks.org/contribute/producing-an-ebook-step-by-step

This page on common issues in older books may be useful:

https://standardebooks.org/contribute/how-tos/common-issues-when-working-on-public-domain-ebooks

Please email often if you have any questions at all. Our standards are
well-established so there is probably already a standard for formatting
whatever problem you've encountered.

When you're ready, email back with a link to your Github repository so
that I can assign you a manager and reviewer.

Have fun! :)
