Hello, for my next project I'd like to do this:

It's an autobiography of Maria Bochkareva, a peasant who became the first female officer in the Russian army in WW1. It's about 100k words long and has little formatting.

Thanks,
Jacob

OK, sure. You can keep the frontispiece. Please send a link to your repo.

Hi everyone, I'm almost done. For the cover image I was thinking of using this still life of Russian cavalry muskets and revolvers, which I think fits the theme of the book.

Cheers,
Jacob

Maybe it’s just me, but apart from the brass instrument I’m having a hard time making out the contents of that image. I think the crop isn’t helping as both cutting off chunks of the items, and also obscuring the red tablecloth which in the main image is providing silhouette context.

From a licensing point of view it’s totally fine, but maybe it’s worth seeing if there are any other options first?

Hmm yes I can see your point. Finding PD images for this time period (and topic) is a bit difficult, but here are a few others.

The first two are attempts to be evocative of her exile in Siberia (the taiga and a house in the winter), and the last is a church in Poland (not technically Russian, but parts of Poland were parts of the Russian empire at the time, and she was quite religious).

Those are all great choices! Personally, I'm leaning towards the first cover; the painting features Scotch pine trees that can be found in Russia and Siberia.

I'll add all three paintings to the art DB. Let me know which one you would like to use for the cover, and I'll mark that painting as "in use".

Thanks Emma, the first one was my preference as well. I've updated the github repo with that cover and the metadata, I believe this is ready for review now.

Some issues filed at https://github.com/jwgarber/maria-bochkareva_isaac-don-levine_yashka/issues/1 . Most of them are minor, but there’s a rebase required to removed the PG blurb from the first commit, and I’m not sure about Isaac Don Levine being a co-author. But I’m happy to be overruled on that one if people disagree.

I don't think we should include him in the slug, therefore he also
shouldn't appear in the cover/title page images. But he can be in the
metadata with `display-seq=0`. See the metadata for how to include a
major contributor who is not in the URL slug.
