Greetings, I'd like to work on Lady Rose’s Daughter by Mary Augusta Ward as my next project.

There are multiple scans on Internet Archive, HathiTrust, Google Books. Is there a preference for source? Some candidates...

Published in London, 1903, 6 illustrations IA London
Published in Canada, 1903, 16 illustrations IA Canada
Published in New York, 1903, 4 illustrations HT New York
Published in London, 1903, 8 illustrations HT London

Depending on the edition, there are 4-16 illustrations by Howard Chandler Christy. Are these "decorative" or should they be made into svg? If the latter, perhaps the scans with best quality images should be selected? Advice most welcome!

I looked for color versions of the illustrations for the cover, but was not successful except for this one in the Canadian edition: Chandler's illustration

Thank you

It's also worthwhile checking to see which edition the PG transcription is based on.

In this case, you don't want the London printings, as they're en-GB, and the transcription is en-US. (The later 1911 printing in the collected works is en-GB, as it happens, even though published in the US.)

Also, note that IA is preferred to Hathi is preferred to Google Books. So this option strikes me as a good one:
since that matches scans, is a good alternative to your Hathi option.

Decorative illustrations in novels like this are cut anyway, so make no difference.

Hope that helps!

Sure. David sent some good advice for you. You would cut the
illustrations. It might be possible to use that artwork as a cover but
you'd have to find a higher resolution scan first to see.

Please send a link to your repo once you start.

Greetings,
Thank you both.

The scans will be the excellent set identified by David (great tip to check global language!): IA scans

Repo with initial commit:  repo
Will do extra commit next to remove PG illustration placeholders before doing chapter split.

PG transcription:  PG 13782

Thanks again.

Greetings,

My choice of cover has been influenced by the titular character being a scheming manipulative woman with secrets, although ultimately redeemed. She is described as tall, slender, dark-haired, most often wearing black satin.

I like this because the woman meets the description and is turned away from the viewer, suggesting something to hide.

Here is the mockup. Unfortunate I had to crop so much off the bottom and lost the impression she is tall.
mock20260412.png

What do you think?

In case you don't like this one, here are my other choices:
Second choice:  Portrait of Hilda Wiik
Third choice:  Woman Thinking
Fourth choice:  At the Window

Thank you.
