I've been really enjoying this website so I thought I'd volunteer. I saw Jenny by Sigrid Undset on the wanted books list so I was hoping to give that a shot - been a fan of her work.

I was looking in past conversations here and saw someone else attempted the book earlier, but there didn't seem to be much movement on it past April or so. Wasn't sure if it got abandoned - if there's a conflict I'm more than happy to pick a different book.

Thanks!

Great, that one would be a good start. You can work on this one since
the last attempt was abandoned.

See the manual for how to structure the part divisions.

This book uses blank space for thematic breaks, make sure to use <hr/>
for those.

Otherwise this should be pretty straightforward.

Make sure to read the Standard Ebooks Manual of Style before starting,
as you won't know what to fix if you haven't read the standards. In
particular, please closely review the semantics, high level patterns,
and typography sections:

https://standardebooks.org/manual

https://standardebooks.org/manual/latest/4-semantics

https://standardebooks.org/manual/latest/7-high-level-structural-patterns

https://standardebooks.org/manual/latest/8-typography

The step by step guide will take you from start to finish:

https://standardebooks.org/contribute/producing-an-ebook-step-by-step

This page on common issues in older books may be useful:

https://standardebooks.org/contribute/how-tos/common-issues-when-working-on-public-domain-ebooks

Please email often if you have any questions at all. Our standards are
well-established so there is probably already a standard for formatting
whatever problem you've encountered.

When you're ready, email back with a link to your Github repository so
that we can assign you a manager and reviewer.

Have fun! 🙂

Have a quick question about semantics for letters. In the scans of the text itself (and the Gutenberg page) the valedictions are attached to the last paragraph of the letter's body with a em dash. Should those be put in the footer or kept outside of it?

An example would be the letter at the end of Part 3, Chapter 6: https://github.com/liamDelaney/sigrid-undset_jenny/blob/master/src/epub/text/chapter-3-6.xhtml

Thanks!

Robin will answer your question, but the link should be to the page in the scans so he can see what the original looks like. Also, the link below gives a 404.

My bad - here's the link to the page scan (pg. 251): https://archive.org/details/jenny01unds/page/250/mode/2up

The repo link should work as well to now - forgot it was set to private.

Thanks for the link. If the valediction is part of the body it can remain there, but mark it up with a <span epub:type="z3998:valediction">.

Finally gotten around to finishing the proofread (most the changes I made during the proofreads were updating archaic spellings), so I think the text is ready for review. I wasn't 100% sure if I needed a cover selected before the review but if it does I can go ahead and find one.  Let me know if anything else is needed. Thanks!

Yep, let’s pick a cover before review. Remember we’re looking for artwork that is CC0, or has PD proof (a photo published in a book from 1930 or earlier). See https://standardebooks.org/manual/1.8.6/10-art-and-images#10.3.3

Alternatively, there’s a good selection of preapproved art at https://standardebooks.org/artworks.

Sounds good - I think I found one that qualifies: Rest by Vilhelm Hammershøi

Public Domain Proof (this book was printed in 1918): https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=gri.ark:/13960/t9089tg6j&seq=225

Let me know if that works or if any more info is needed.

Great, good find. I’ve uploaded it to the artworks DB at https://standardebooks.org/artworks/vilhelm-hammershoi/rest, but I can’t assign it to this production yet as Alex hasn’t created an entry yet.

You can go ahead and add this to your repo, using Vilhelm in the data (not Wilhelm as per the file name).

Alright I've updated the cover and completed the metadata, imprint, and colophon. I don't see any errors from se lint so I think it's ready for review. Let me know if anything else is needed.
